I have a query about engagements. In the rule it says that a formation can engage an enemy formation and move as many stands into base to base contact with an enemy formation. So, as the diagram below shows, can you wraparound enemy formations to get more stands in base to base contact?
E= eldar stand
M= space marine stand

MMMM

EEEE
EEEE

IN the above situation, the Eldar decide to engage the marine formation, can they do the following...?

EEEE
MMMM
EEEE

Or do they have to do the following...?

MMMM
EEEE
EEEE

In the first engage example, there are all 8 Eldar stands in base to base contact but in the second, only 4 are in base to base and the remaining 4 contribute with their firefight values.

Which is correct?

You can't pass through an enemy unit's zone of control unless you're moving to "base" them during a charge.  Once the enemy unit is based, it loses its zone of control, so attacking units can much more easily go "around" them... you just can't go "over" the models.

In your example, once the first four Eldar units base the four Marine units, the remaining four Eldar units may move as they wish to base the Marines, within their normal movement.

If you had limited movement, you could even do something like this:

Code Sample:
 EE
EMMMME
EEEE

You can even position your bases, if they're rectangular, so that the "thin" edges of two attacking bases touch a "wide" edge on the enemy to double up.

something that has always irked me, unless they're modelled facing the thin edge.

it just looks so contrived.
sigh.

You can't imagine the soldiers turning to attack?  *laugh*

Just tidy up a game mechanic for me here guys.

Where Chroma says "model" when stating that units cannot pass through each other, I think people generally assume "base". Here is the relevant section
1.7.2 Other Units
Enemy units may never move over or through each other.
With the exception of infantry, a friendly unit may never
move directly over another friendly unit. You can move
over infantry units with other units, as the stationary
infantry are assumed to get out of the way. Note that
‘moving over’ refers to the model itself, not the unit’s
base

(my emphasis)
. Ok, so how do people make this distinction work in practice when dealing with infantry units? A mental rule that I use is that friendly infantry bases can move over each other, but cannot pass over an enemy infantry base (because to do so means individual figures passing between enemy figures which seems unreasonable). Obviously you need to have enough room to put bases down so they are not standing on each others toes. Vehicles are obviously a lot easier being a lot larger, so everthing must go round them.

So, what do others do?

i'd guess it refers to the first two sentances

means you can go over the corner of a large base as long as you don't collide with a model.
