Just for curiosity purposes. I myself play allowing pre-measuring but I'm thinking of changing that to make the game more exciting.

The group I play in are advocating non pre-measure.
(There'll probably be some tussle about it, but non is more fun and broken things like clipping assaults are less deciding.)

Yes. I'm not a big fan of Warhammer range guessing mechanic - it just feels too gamey and dependent on player skill. It's unrealistic even in fantasy (Dark Elf riders decide to charge some Dwarfs and find out that they're one centimeter short... so they just stay there standing around like idiots... yeah right) and in 40k setting everyone should be loaded to their teeth with measuring devices of all kinds.

The trained nature of soldiers, personal range-finders, satellites, psykers, infiltrated spotters, tactical cognators, and any other of a myriad of skills and equipment make pre-measuring fine by me.

Relying on the Eyeball mk.1 to "guestimate" can be fun, but I do prefer pre-measuring.

Premeasuring here, too.

I voted "no pre-measuring" since this is what we´ve been doing, old-school style.

However, I am slowly warming to the idea since it is easier on non-regular/new players and definitely allows for a more tactical game, which E:A should be all about.

Prefer pre-measuring,also it is in the rule book for that to be the default way of playing unless both players agree not to use pre-measuring.

We normally with pre measuring.  though sometimes we don't allow it to add some variation.

the groups i play in all premesure as well as the reasons give above one other is that there are a few WFB players who are really good at guessing (i'm one of them) and it's really unfair on players that can't.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!  :D

When I played a lot of SM/TL I could guess 50cm and 75cm ranges to within a centimeter or two.  I don't think that's fair to someone beginning the game who doesn't have the same practice.  I always hated it when the guy across the table is much better than me because he's spent time throwing poker chips on a table to practice estimating distances.  (Yes, I knew WFB players that would sit around the game shop and do exactly that.)  I have no interest in doing that stuff and it bugs me to be penalized in a game for not being willing to do it.

Pre-measuring causes some fiddliness and a bit of rules-dependence that people think is not fun, but without pre-measure you just create the opportunity for different unfair/unfun situations.  The player who's willing to spend time practicing estimating exactly 15cm is at an advantage.  Beardy players would probably do stuff like mounting vehicles on bases that were exactly 5cm long so they would have something on the board to help them estimate, and so on.

In the choice between fiddly pre-measurements to min-max game rules and having to SWAG distances, I'll take the pre-measuring any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

As an 'old-school' wargamer I have always premeasured, not least because even in horse & musket periods events tend to be analogue rather than digital - you are either in range or not. The point being that bullets (and horses) don't run out of steam at precisely 200yds (or what ever range you are measuring), but they do tend to lose efficiency quite quickly at that point. Consequently, IMHO pre-measuring allows players to simulate more acurately real-world events.

I am a great fan of the E:A barrage rules which actually simulate this quite well; you measure unit-to-unit, but then place a template to show the effect which can cover other units that are beyond the stipulated range of the weapons.

Non-Premeasuring, it just feels wrong otherwise, besides it's a lot faster IMO. I'll maybe give pre-measuring a go. People who are switched on can always come up with tricks to guess or learn to guess at pre-measuring. In a way they have to develop this skill along with how to play the game. It's just another random element of the unknown thrown in to make it fun but I see the point of the other views posted here too.

This is interesting. I would have thought that it would have been a more 50/50 result.

I view Epic very much as a chess like game; it is a practice in tactics and i feel that pre-measuring makes it more so.
