The 2008 FAQ has this Q and A:

Q:When Void Shields recharge in formations with multiple units is one dice rolled for the formation or one dice for each unit?
A: One dice roll per unit. Then pick the highest dice. Each pip can be used to remove one Blast Marker or recharge one shield on every unit in the formation that has Void Shields.


How exactly does this work? Does "one dice roll per unit" mean that I roll 2 dice per unit (as decribed in the Rule "1.13.1 Regrouping") and then pick the highest? Can I use the result to recharge one shield on every single war engine in the formation per pip (so for example all 4 shields of a Warhound pack with 2 pips)?
Btw I think this is a major addition to the rulebook which should rather be part of the Errata.

I think there's a slip in the jargon there.

One dice roll per unit.

Should be

One dice roll per formation.

Shouldn't it?  When you marshal a formation you roll a 2d6 and take the highest. That number can be split between repairing void shields (in which case you repair one void shield for every unit in the formation) and removing BMs.

I agree with Dave.

The way I read the FAQ is that repairs are carried out on all void shields in the formation. So, if you have a pair of Warhounds that are regrouping and your highest dice is a '4', you may remove 3x BMs and repair a single void shield on each titan.

It should be, roll the dice, pick the highest, then choose how many 'pips' will go on blast marker removal (for the formation) and how many will regenerate void shields, adding that many onto each warengine. So functionally the same as for a single WE, though was a possibility to waste pips more.

This is my understanding as well.

It is not a mistake that each "pip" dedicated to void shield regeneration gives back one shield per unit.

Personally, I never liked it.  However, even though it sounds like it could be wickedly powerful, there are no formations that can really abuse it.  For example, the most a Warhound pair can squeeze out of it is 2 extra shields, and that's assuming that both have both shields down.

Well, in the current test armylist of the Skitarii there are the Ordinati Minores, three war engines with 2 void shields each per formation.
Also there are Black Legion list Assault Companies with 3 Death Wheels in a formation (again 2 shields each).

The benefit of a shielded formation is less powerful in general than those same WEs being separate activations.

4 single Warhounds is mean, if you take them in 2 pairs I will gladly give you more shields back.
