If a formation with Daemonic Pact summons Daemons, must it use all summon points it generates if able? The rules are not 100% clear on this.

i.e. formation rolls '4' and army has 6 lesser daemons in pool. Can it summon just 1?

I'd like to know this too.

Summoning points must be used to summon daemonic
units from the Daemon Pool and summoned units are brought into
play immediately.

And then you have this...

So this is exactly why I said that it is not 100% clear :] The "must" here can, if we extend it hard enough, also mean that they cannot be used to anything else than to summon from the pool ... =]

Anyway, maybe units could roll less if they want?
(and the strategy roll '1' and '6' rule should be removed, it si never remembered anyway :p )

I've always played that you didn't have to use all the summoning points - if thats not right it makes a huge difference to the list

I agree with the interpretation of choosing how many of the generated points to use and not being fixed with your dice roll. Although I could see the funny side of the fickleness of the gods in having to take the number rolled. Plus what if you run out of daemons, well your nice expensive SM unit gets spontaneously convered into daemons and then lost at the end of the turn.

yes I am all for upping demons in the list (and making it less of a WE list!).

I would have no objections to someone playing it this way.

I don't think it "ups" daemons in the list, you've still got to pay for them...

In fact, at least for Black Legion, I think it would *decrease* the use of daemons as they become less flexible: Roll "too" well for your Forlorn Hopes and now your Chosen don't have any Daemons to chose from.  I'll admit it's humourous in a "the Chaos Gods screw everybody!" way, but I'm not sure that's the intent.

I think the "must" is probably a grammatical error and is in reference to that daemon summoning is the "only" think the Summoning Points can be used for... someone should email/PM wraeththu to get her thoughts on this, because I don't think she usually reads this part of the forums.

Sorry I was referring to the Chaos player having the choice in the number summoned.

You're supposed to be able to choose whether or not to use the summoning points.  You may elect not to summon the full number if you don't want to do so.

I believe the "must" sentence was intended to reference "summon from the daemon pool" rather than summoning from formation to formation.   In other words, you must summon from the off-board daemons, not shuffle ones that are already on-board.

It was not intended to say all points must be used.

The wording is unclear and obviously needs a little tweak.
