Post subject:  Some GOOD news on the future of Epic...

e-mailed FW yesterday to enquire what their stance on Fanatics 'evolution' was and to enquire whether they perhaps intended to increase model production as a result (to compensate for the lack of SGs releases), to decrease production (due to fears of lack of sales) or keep things roughly the same.

The reply was quite positive and it looks like FW plan to continue to support and expand their epic ranges, for at least the forseeable future. Though some of you out there may prefer the metal personally I love the extra detail and regard this as excellent news :)

Full reply cut and pasted below:

i can reveal as much as we have decided! Yes we will continue the epic range and while the existing specialist games department are effectively 'maintaining' the rules side of the hobby, we will now be the main developer of the models. Please note this is a new addition and forge world is a small outing with only a few model makers on board, obviously the Specialist games ranges will take a side note to our current projects and ventures, however i will confirm that we will definitely be expanding things further in the future and developing a lot more new models and / or making our own versions of existing pieces (like we did with epic imperial guard). As and when we will start the next big thing for these systems i am not sure but i am sure you will start to see new releases from us by the end of the year. I am not sure about War master, Mordhiem or blood bowl, these have not been spoke about but the range of forgeworld Epic and BFG models will grow considerably in the coming year or two.

Many thanks

Ahhh, now this IS good news. The only thing I hope is that the "Making our versions of the existing stuff" part is left on the back seat...

My only beef is with the prices of FW infantry. While the quality is unparallelled, so is the price tag. I don't mind paying that extra for a few specialist troops but for the basic grunts I think it's too expensive so I hope SG will at least keep the existing plastics (and hopefully a few of the E40k era ones too) in production.
FW vehicles is great IMO. First of all quality and price are excellent, secondly resiin modles doesn't get paint chippings as easily as metal models.

Cheers! :)

That is good, I hoped F/W would carry the ball !  But as I have said before, with all the versions of Epic around, if they opened up the Archives, there are plenty of models there ! ( )  Not that I have anything against new models, but as I have said before, as F/W clearly demonstated, how may versions of something do we need ??!  F/W has produced a number of redunant models ! Especially for the IG and Eldar, IMO.   New stuff is most welcome but the 4th and 5th version of a Chimera, Basilisk, Falcon, etc., etc. makes no sense to me.  My other concern is that F/W Epic tends to be a bit fragile, I see that as a minor annoyance.  However, as in life, nothing's perfect.  I would (do) look forward to F/W Epic releases like Tallarn and Elysian (?) Infantry, Kroot Knarlacs (yes, I said it again !) :D , Chaos, Necrons, SoBs and maybe even 'Nids !  But no more IG AFVs, SMs, Orks  or Eldar, there are enough of those around !  Check out eBaY !   :;):

Great News! :)

Makes me wonder, though, why FW can operate fairly sucessfully on its own, while SG could not.
(Dream Mode/on)  What if SG had been reorganized along the same lines as FW?  (Dream Mode /off)  ???

my 2cents,

From what I understand, SG was probably profitable, but less profitable than the huge cash cows of WFB and WH40K. So the goal is to slowly strangle SG, and reaffect the resources. FW seems to have an approach centered less around "more profits and the rest be damned".

Regarding FW stepping up, it's certainly good news for the more wealthy among us (especially as far as infantry is concerned). But we should also remember that FW miniatures are much less "user friendly" than the classic plastic and metal from GW : they are more fragile, longer to prepare before painting and harder to paint.

Also, FW seems to have a development schedule focused on the aesthetic value of models, not on gameplay. We will have to see how that will work.

In the end, while I would prefer to see the current synergy between SG and FW continue, this is certainly good news especially when compared to the alternative of nothing new. Most minis coming from FW would definitely keep EA a niche product, though (imagine building a SM army at current Grey Knights rate :O )

I'm sorry I know I've been out of the loop and all but what happen to Specialist games.  Ok the last I heard was fanatic was going to an ezine.  Now I get the impression that they are no longer doing minis.  Is this true and when did this happen?

Need the info

Thanks

Hi,

Fanatic/SG is still making minis for Epic, just at a slower rate than before, and most of their releases will be older stuff repackaged (although there was talk of Tyranids being new designs). And with this reduction in production by SG themselves, GW have given FW the go ahead to produce more stuff for the SG range. From what I've read, it mainly means that we might see a wider range of minis than we feared we would get after the fall of Fanatic. Although nowhere have I seen anything posted to say that the future armies won't be produced in some numbers by GW, so a lot of what is written on certain other forums (not mentioning any names...) is a bit over-reactionary.

On a side note, I hope GW produces the flyer units for future armies, I really hate the oversized FW flyers and would hate to see them become the norm. :(

Cheers,
Freshmetal

Hi

I e-mailed FW about the new Catalogue, forthcoming price raises and future models (specifically Voss Prows for BFG and any new Epic figures). This was the response:

"the prices are likely to be in effect on the website in the next 24 hours, small technically difficulties have slowed this transition, as for the Voss pattern things, it was an idea of Tony's a few years ago but has remained that way and i can honestly tell you that if we do do them then il will not be in the near future. As for the list of Epic items you have provided ihave not heard even rumours of us doing any of them, not to say we will not but they are certainly not on the production schedule for the next year or two."
:(
Cheers

Ouch... That hurt... :(
We can only pray that the confusion is because FW hasn't informed everybody there and formed a clear policy on the area... ...Even though it is difficult not to be cynical...

Cheers! :)

Aye- tis a shame. I know it was the one bright spark of good news on SG Epic Forums recently.

I am also disapointed about BFG Voss Prows. I want to do a Battlefleet Armageddon and my converting skills are not up to doing 4-6 Voss Pattern CAs/CLs. Actually not up to doing just the 1 conversion.
Recently FW have been very quick to release Epic versions of W40k models using their de-biggulator. So I was hoping that Elysian Drop Troops might make Epic scale soon.
:(
Cheers

James
