Sorry I couldn't make it last night, hope you guys had fun.

Kingston area eh? I'm in egham so not far from you at all. I'll definitely be up for a game. And I'll tryyy to get to the club next tuesday!

Hi Alan

Well Matt and myself mentioned maybe heading to GW vets night in Thursday in Kingston, so maybe we could have a three-way or recuit another player?  Not sure who else lives around there?

The plan is to convert two more in the near future, and seeing how annoying Matt's Thunderbolts were I might be switching out my Hydra's for a pair of flyers myself.

Also, has anyone had much success with a manticore battery?  They let off one shot at Matt's Scouts killing one base, then had to reload the next turn and were easily broken the third and final turn.  Hmmm.

Only in armies that had more "must be killed first" tm formations! If you don't have death strikes, vultures etc your artillery normally gets hit first. In many ways its one reason I use basilisks, they make good broken formation snipers and can be ignored by opponents as they don't have that scare factor the other guard artillery has.

Weeell Moronguhl in answer to your question some posts ago,

TRC was testing his Salamanders, and let me use his "competition winning" Orks. The Sallies army tends towards slightly fewer but larger formations with some additional AV upgrades (Redeemer and Baal predators); so an up-gunned Tactical, some Whirlwinds +Hunter, two devastators, an Assault +Preds, a Scout, a Terminator, a THawk (to retrieve the termies) and some TBolts. The Orks had two 'Big' warbands, a Cult of speed, three Blitz brigades and two Big Gunz (all with oddboy upgrades), some Fighta bombaz and a Great Gargant.

I set up the Orks garrisoning the two Gunz mobs on either flank of a 'Big' mob, the second 'Big' mob in the centre leading the Great Gargant and the rest of the army.

TRC teleported the Terminators on the left-hand Gunz mob, won the initiative and anahilated them. He also used his upgunned Assaults formation to assault and break the Right hand Gunz mob. Both armies then concentrated on gaining the centre of the battlefield with the Orks pushing forwards various formations to lay BMs on the Termies, and the Sallies replying in kind. It culminated with the central 'Big' mob doubling through its compatriot to lay BMs and support the assault of the other 'Big' Mob on the Tacticals that had arrived to their front. However, despite having a third of their number in B-B and some 39 Ork units assaulting or supporting, this achieved a grand total of '1' dead tactical - and the Orks lost '12' in reply and subsequent hackdowns. To add insult to injury, in the following turn the Marines scouts used their infiltrator ability to mount a clipping assault on the flank of the remaining 'Big' mob, and broke it as well (with the support of the victorious Tacticals) for the loss of 1-2 stands. So with the Orks down to two disilusioned mobs and a Great Gargant, the game was stopped and reset.

Game #2 used exactly the same setup except the RH Gunz mob was put on OW (to discourage the Assault Marines). TRC switched the Termies to drop in  on the Big Blitz brigade, but one stumbled and even the SC reroll could not get the formation to budge. Subsequently both Gunz mobs and a small Blitz brigade killed some of the marine transport using their Zzaps and OW fire, and with the Great Gargant steaming up the table, the Orks had most of their formations intact. Meanwhile the Sallies ended up with the Terminators broken (the THawk flew by without trying to retrieve them) and most formations severely mauled; and the game slipping rapidly from their grasp.

TRC suggested that the remarkable difference between the two games lay in the different tactics adopted by the Orks. In Game #1 the Orks were pushing formations forwards which were being picked off in turn by the various advancing marine formations. This strategy was precipitated by the loss of the two Gunz mobs at the outset. In Game #2, the failure of the Termie assault allowed the Orks to use these Gunz mobs, and the subsequent activation sequence meant that it was the Marines who were forced to advance in a hail of fire.

Personally I lay the blame squarely on my fickle dice which threw abysmally in Game #1, and then made a stunning comeback in Game #2. And before anyone asks, TRC very bravely used my dice throughout and seemed to achieve fairly consistent results - though he did throw 5x '6' saves at one point (from 6x dice). I replied in kind on game #2 saving 4x scorchas from the ravages of his Tbolts.

Sage advice dude!  Putting the artillery on the blitz seems like a bit of a no-brainer.

Well TFL reckons about 40 mins to GW in Croydon, which is actually longer than it takes me to get to the Cock Tavern.  Is there somewhere in between us maybe?  Any idea what Croydon thinks of epic games in the store?

Just called GW Kingston-apparently they're trying to re-centre the club on the big three games, and they don't want people playing it even on vets night!

I guess maybe if we went in a weekday morning when nothing else is happening, but I work Mon-Fri so that's not likely!

Playing at your flat if there's room would be great, but looks like Euston is actually easier!

Rug mentioned last night he's been there a bit, yeah.

How far from Clapham North is the club?  Looks like about ten minutes walk, making it about a 35-40 minute journey from my house I think.

Much Epic going down there?

Right now not much. 2 or 3 people sound interested but are not getting regular games so they seem to be falling back to fantasy! A couple of regular people playing could get more interested. Best bet is to join their forum and say hello. Clapham Forum

Hey Rug.  Tried to PM you but your box is full!

I spoke to a friend who used to work at GW Kingston and he said that the staff would get in trouble if they didn't let us play there.  He reckoned a well worded email to HQ would get it sorted.

He also said there's a guy he knows who was often asking for an epic game there, and he's given me his contact details, so we may well soon have four roughly Kingston-centric gamers.  If we can actually get permission to play then we should be laughing!

EDIT: Anyone else had problems with playing Epic in GW stores?

-Moronguhl

Yep.

My group were banned from playing Epic in GW Oxford Street a few years back, I wrote a letter to HQ on behalf of the gaming group asking what GW's specific policy was re: Specialist Games and met Jervis Johnson for the first time a couple of months later as regards the same issue and had a talk with him about it.

Basically, it's Manager's discretion, and many Managers do actively bias against or outright ban Epic / Specialist Games from their stores.

Of the Specialist Games Epic is in an especially unfortunate position, as it's a mechanically more adult-suitable game and is a lot cheaper than Warhammer 40,000, neither of which is particularly appealing to the GW sales method (which is based on selling the Core games to kids). The GW store is there to make money, the Managers are under pressure to make money, so you can forgive them for trying to promote the products that make the most money.

Bad for the more adult side of the hobby, good for the sales figures.

Still, some GW's do allow Specialist Games to be played, so you may get lucky.
