Though I agree with your conclusion, nothing in the rules seem to indicate that you cannot roll to hit with weapons that have no chance of harming the target.

The rules only mention that you must allocate any hits rolled to valid targets.

Of course, rolling when there are no valid targets is pointless, unless our understanding of the way disrupt is intended is wrong.

The substance of the question is: do disrupt hits need to be validly alocated to cause BMs ?

The answer I am expecting is yes, and that's what E&C and Nealhunt indicated in the above mentioned thread.

The brief answer is that you can only allocate hits to valid targets (1.9.6).
Disrupt inflicts a BM for each hit inflicted rather than each kill. (2.2.2)
Since you may not "inflict" hits on invalid targets, then they do not disrupt.

As previously answered in the other thread, if there *is* a valid target, then the Disrupt hits do get applied. So if 6x AP disrupt hits are allocated to a formation with several AT units but also a single AP unit, then the formation gets all 6x disrupt BMs even though only a single unit is a valid target (and killed many times over).

To me the rules do not only mention hits are allocated to a valid target, again from 1.1.3 unit datasheets.
Quote:
Firepower: The numbers here represent how effective the
weapon is when it shoots. Firepower comes in two ‘flavours’:
Anti-personnel (abbreviated to AP) and Anti- tank (abbreviated
to AT). AP fire is used against infantry targets and AT fire
against armoured vehicles.
A weapon that has both an AP and an
AT value may choose to use either one when it attacks, but may
not use both in the same turn.

I'm sure the highlighted section above states that AP is used against Infantry, therefore to me if there are no Infantry present in the target formation then AP cannot be used.

I don't believe this is treated in the rules nor in the FAQ, so here goes:

Can a disrupt that has several types (AP/AT) weapon be used in an form unsuited to its target to inflict a BM? For example, imagine a AP3+/AT4+ Disrupt weapon, that shoots at a Leman Russ company, could the player choose to use the AP value to inflict more BMs?
My answer would be no.
The reasons have been covered by quite a few in this thread (and by Neal and E&C in the linked thread).

By extension, can a disrupt barrage like the Nightspinner array also choose to use a different column so as to inflict more BMs?
No (see dptdexys posts for details).

I can't say that I've heard of anyone having this question coming up and it does seem fairly straight forward what the answer is.

Sorry I am late to the discussion. Again, living in Australia... etc.

The disrupt rule talks about going on to make saves for hits as normal which implies they must have been validly allocated. In the absence of common sense, changing "inflicted hits" to "allocated hits" would clear it up but it does make me a little sad to see these types discussions on here. Feels a bit 40k to me...

If one person has the question, another will too. FAQ it for the next handbook run thru.
