Hi,
I am starting to play epic and have printed almost the entire rule book (I don't know if I need speed freeks, chaos, or even white scars). I am looking to do both sm and eldar. I love the eldar super heavy models and the basic sms are wonderful. I have a couple of questions though (i know per usual)
1) For the Eldar army can you use multiple aspects for the aspect requirements of the list? 2) Is a unit one stand? 3) Do you need a rhino for each formation of space marines 4) are rhinos "free"? 5) How do small arms work? 6) Is there a big following in SE MI (US)? 7) What do you reccomend for starting both of these (to be done seperatly but easier to ask once)? Which boxes and blisters are best?
What is the smallest game you can play and be done with in about an hour? I like to start small and move my way up.
Thanks for your help and here is to working with you in the future

Hi There, great to see some new blood, hope you enjoy Epic
Ill try to answer some of these (and probably get half of them wrong!), OK:
1) As far as I know you can mix and match aspects in an aspect host (shining spears aside IIRC) if thats what your asking
2)Yep. Cant think of any exceptions.
3&4) Rhinos depend on the formation. When present they are listed next to the formation as "plus Transport" in the SM army list and are free. Note that they are not compulsary and can be replaced by drop pods, upgraded to Razorbacks or not taken at all to allow the formation to be transported by air or garrisoned.
5) Yeah, this took me a while to grasp too. Small arms are usually (?always?) the weapon that confers a unit its fire fight attack, assuming it has a FF value. The nomimal range of 15cm is the same as range the range limit on FF in assaults. These are listed to show any FF specific special attacks the unit has and for flavour.
7) For starting with SM and Eldar you should be aware that these are generally considered lists with steep learning curves and require a good handle on the rules to get the most out of. For beginners IG and Orks are very forgiving- it might be worth proxying with them to get a handle on the rules.
Anyway, re blisters to get... The SM battle company box is a steal and really should form the core of any marine list, beyond that try to have a mixture of unit types. Its hard to have a power gaming list in E:A and as long as you build something flexible you will generally do ok. While marine armour can be a bit weak (either expensive in points or relatively thin armour) Thunder hawks and landing craft are very competive as are land speeders. One of the more competitive marine lists is an air mobile one. Titans are very useful in a marine list too for the heavy firepower; warhounds fit nicely and have sweeet Forgeworld models.
Also consider picking up some second hand plastic rhinos. They arent as pretty as the new lead ones, but are cheap as chips on ebay and you will need a few of them for most lists.
EDIT- oh, and terminators rock. Yeah, theyre expensive. But they are soo cool, and tough, and teleport. Nuff said really
I dont know much about eldar im afraid so cant really help there.
Id start with the training scenarios first- these are quick and well worth the effort. Id imagine 1000-1500 points is a good number for quick games, particularly using non horde armies. But im a slow gamer who generally plays ork or guard, so cant really give much advice on finishing a game in an hour!
Amyway, hope that helps and looking forward to seeing your minis

Hi. Most of your questions have got answers. Just to add...
1. Yes, any combination of Aspects can be put into a Troope. Most people go with two Aspect types as this adds support and variety, but keeps that formation focussed.
3. The Rhino question comes up a lot. The easiest way to think about it is leave them out when creating a force list. Then, at the end, any formation which doesnt have Drop Pods, Razorbacks, etc can get the Rhinos - the minimum required to transport all stands (two per Rhino). These Rhinos are free, as this reflects the Marines preference for lightning raids and mobility.
5. Small Arms is another frequent one. Essentially, in most cases, you can ignore small arms weapons. The Marines use their Bolters only in assaults - not long ranged fire. So, a Tactical stand is really only armed with a Missile Launcher, since the bolters make up the FireFight value for the stand. But, the Marines do carry tham. So, the solution was to put Bolters on the stat sheet but not give them a 'normal' ranged attack. All Small Arms weapons really just contirbute to the FireFight values. The only exception to this is where a Small Arms weapon has an ability - for example MW. In this case, the ability is applied to the FireFight attack.
I dont know if this is clear... ?

Welcome aboard, Kharn.
I'm not sure about SE Michigan, but there are some players in/near Chicago and some in Ohio, I think. Too bad you aren't closer to Connecticut.

Kharn: There used to be at least 2 Epic groups around Detroit, but I haven't been in contact with anyone around there in years. I'm sure there must still be some folks around.
I will probably be up to Detroit to visit family in the fall. If you'd be interested, we should try to set something up when it gets closer.

Hey sorry about this but I have another question:
Do you have to have the ml guy on the stand for the unit to have it, or not b/c it is on the sheet?

This is in the FAQ. In general though, you can use the 'Counts As' rule. As in, these stands with 5 marines on them and no missile launcher count as a Tactical unit. EA is pretty forgiven in this regard.
