I'm starting a Tau army, and want some sort of objective/terrain piece thatn other club members can look at and go "woah, what's that? I want to play!". A piecfe I thought would be good is part of a landed war-sphere, having part of it with a giant 'foot' sticking onto the table. Something like this: Table edge V V War-sphere V V Ioooooooooooooo Ioooooooooooooo I-\ooooooooooooo I---\oooooooooooo I-----\-----I------Iooo I------I----I------Iooo I---/oooooooooooo I-/ooooooooooooo Ioooooooooooooo Ioooooooooooooo I'm looking for some advice about how big to build it, and what sort of material to use... |

Whoa! That's a cool idea. Too bad I don't have any advice. |

It would have to be realy, really big! When BFG came out, I was working for GW and we thought about doing a crashed Cobra destroyer for Epic 40000. We worked out it would be more than 6 feet long! I don't have the BFG Kroot warshere model, but it looks a lot bigger than a Cobra... Regards, Reaver |

Well if my calculations are correct, a cobra destroyer is about 1.5 kilometers*. Now that makes a cobra technically shorter than the armored prow of a Retribution, including it's prow ram. A warsphere is what? bigger than a battleship (albeit hollowish so the mass may be the same or even less) If a battleship is 42 feet long in Epic, you have, suffice to say, a hell of a project. Now you are only making a fraction of the sphere, if you do it right you can get in under 18 feet. Really though, who cares about scale? It may be a bit small (1/8 actual) but if it looks half decent, is painted with more than 5 colors, and can function as more than just terrain you did your job as well as the pros at GW. As for materials? with something this big, don't be afraid to use plexiglass or even wood for the base, you can easily cover it in plasticard (which you will need LOTS of for all the panneling) and random gribblies. Also, don't be afraid to ask for pictures and sketches. Hell, even ask the FW guys for advice! They designed the mini, I'm sure they would be interested in something like this, and who knows what they have that could help! With all the repetitive designs and shapes on something this massive, making a master set of fully gribbled panels and casting them would be infinitely useful. Most importantly, don't let the project intimidate you. It's huge, it's a lot of work, and it will take a lot of time, but in the end it will be worth every second of it. :Edited to correct the length of a Cobra destroyer |

I used local.live.com to get an aerial photograph of London, and then sketched the size I think the war spheres would be. The blue circles are the bases, the red the outermost edge and the green and yellow bits the 'feet'. I think they'd be about a mile across, which translates to about 50m (I think) at epic scale. Ouch... Edit: I was typing this while Yersinia Pestis was posting, so I didn't see your post. The plan is to do a table corner now, rather than a table edge, with one 'foot' visible at just off 45 degrees from the edges, and another sticking on from the edge of the table. Have I got the scale about right? http://img247.imageshack.us/my.php?....ou6.jpg |

Fantastic idea, but the background states that Kroot Warspheres burrow themselves underground once landed, using their thrusters and such to blast away until they're .... submerged! It's still a grand ol' project, just get the 'arc' or 'dome' right that might be protruding from underground! Notably, the model for BFG does include massive spikey bits, so you could probably put in at least a couple of protruding towers and things that extend from its surface somewhat impressively! A good idea nonetheless! |

(colonel_sponsz @ Jun. 13 2007,12:04) QUOTE Where might one find the background for Kroot Warspheres? There's not a lot of fluff available. This is about it: Unlike the Tau, the Kroot are capable of true warp travel but the exact method has been kept secret from their employers. To the Kroot, warp travel is almost migratory and they seem incapable of navigating anywhere other than systems with habitable worlds. It appears they are drawn to functioning eco-systems The famous Kroot Warspheres are self-contained towns wherein is kept the retained knowledge of Kroot technology and the choicest items they have received as payment for their services. As such they do not risk them in battle willingly and try to avoid direct action against warships unless the need is great or they are being exceptionally well rewarded. Warspheres have a single drive running through their core from north to south pole and manoeuvring thrusters along their equator. These engines are reliable but very basic making Warspheres very slow. They are powerful enough to allow the Warsphere to land and take-off from a planet although the process is not elegant. When dirtside the manoeuvring thrusters will normally be used to bury the Warsphere. If you need the BFG rules, look here: http://www.specialist-games.com/battlef....Tau.pdf Regards, Reaver |

If what Xisor says is true, perhaps you could make the very top of a Kroot Warsphere just peaking out of the ground, along with lots of disturbed terrain all around it (jutting rocks, flipped over trees, etc). That way you could make it any size you wanted (depending on how 'deep' it burrowed). |

Still looking at it, and I'm now planning to do it as built in as part of a board, rather than a modular terrain piece, as it is quite big... If it's 'only' 3km across, then it would have a diameter of about 10m in Epic scale, taking up 54 tournament sized tables ![]() I'd read the Tau fleet PDF before, but had forgotten about the burrowing part! Looking at a picture of the war-sphere here (GW UK online store) I think that the towers on both ends would mark the outermost parts sticking up from the ground, so I'll just be showing 3/10ths of the diameter (so only 3m). So that there will be some terrain showing other than the sphere, the backstory is that when it landed, it landed moving sideways aswell as down (so that though there'll be a wake made of dirt and rubble, there will still be some other terrain). Not sure what to do the rest of the table, but the idea of a city seems fun ("Don't worry theses walls will keep dem nasty Tau out" *SPLAT*). I won't be able to do much about it this week as I'mm off on the West Highland Way, but the following week I'll get a plan together and start constructing it. Hopefully... |

Three metres? What size of storage space do you have? Good grief, this should be good ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Oops, meant to say that it'd be coming on from a table corner, so it'd "only" show about 2/3rds of the radius (so about 1m in). It'd still be pretty substantial though! |
