Hello All,

I was day dreaming and I came up with a cool idea for some Epic: A terrian. ?A huge Airfield! ?That would be cool.

Then I remembered something. ?Upon review the of Epic forgeworld flyers and pictures displayed in the Imperial Armor books the Imperial fighters and bombers have no landing wheels. So they don't exactly roll to stop. ?

So how do combat aircraft like the Thunderbolt and the Marauder Bomber land and how would and imperial airfield look like?

It looks like they have some limited form of hover. ?There is a pic of a maraduer in the FW book that shows it taking off, hovering just above the pavement. ?Do you think this comes from some form of anti-gravemetric device, similar to the landspeeder, ?or just the ability to vector thrust down. ?

With that image maybe an airfield would look like those little helichopters pads in the Command and Conquer games, remember those. I use to love building fields of them.

In the Black library novel "Execution Hour" the launch bays seem to be equiped with suspensor field that holds the aircraft while they throttle up until release. ?I assume at the same time those suspension field work to bring in the fighters and bombers as well. ?

It may that what is working here is some kind of suspension field maybe built into a utility vehicle. ?

Well I was wondering what the people here thought.

Thanks and Take Care

As far as the actual docking points go, I'd make it look a bit like a nintendo controller (cross-shaped, with sloped-up sides for the suspensors)

Hi!

Thats a pretty cool idea and would make for an interesting battlefield if you added bunkers and AA defense.

I'd imagine the flyers incorporate some sort of anti-gravs themselves, just for landing and take off- only the Valkyries & Vultures would actually have vectored engines imo...
.....of course, I'm sure not all Forge Worlds would have the tech required to build these systems, so there will be Marauders, Lightnings, Thunderbolts etc with conventional landing gear, and nothing stops you building your airfield.. should be a great battlefield if it does get made I'm sure... ?:)

Hi Commissar,
I've read (and enjoyed) Ex hour too - the suspensor field would probably work well in 0g in space i.e. for off-ship launches, but I don't think it would launch a Marauder + payload from a planet surface. I see the Valkyrie and Vulture as hyper-copter-equivalents, but could only imagine the Thud and the Marauder and Lightning take off conventionally. So go for the runway!

I see them landing like Star Wars X-wings, IIRC.  I'm sure that's where G/W got the idea !  So a runway of some sort is in order.  And Remember ... with the E40K game you got little cardboard runways to stage, rearm & refit your aircraft ...  :;):

Thank for the replys.

Those where nice little airfields.

I like your ideas guys. I think a hybrid would work here. A mix of landing pads combined with a conventional runway for the more  normal airfraft, and maybe a few alert fighters on the launch platforms.  The launch platforms idea comes from the Imperial Armor book where the show a Lighting on a ramp just ready to blast off.

Yeah some nice little ideas here

A fuel dump, a couple of hangers, a tower, some AA emplacements, a Big Tarmac.  Maybe a bombed out section of runway thats been repaired.

What am I missing?

Take Care

Only the second complete set and my mailing address by the sounds of it. :D

I REALLY like this concept for a gaming board - Its got my mind rushing, but I know I'll never get around to it. Make sure to keep us posted.

Note:
Make the main runways semi-destroyed, otherwise your center field will have no "excuse" for cover where you really need to be placing objectives. A few areas suffering from ABS (Aerial Bombardment Syndrom - classic cases include melted tarmac, large piles of rubbles and open wounds) will provide cover & give locations for objectives.

Time cast has a great  control tower peice that will be lovely for this... :)

I'll see what I can do guys.  In the meantime just keep imaging

The wreckage and debris of a Landa crash across the runway.  :D

G'day Luis!

Great idea- I made a 1/300 scale airfield about 12 years ago for Modern Wargaming (long gone- no pics, sorry guys!)

I had 2 runways, Aircraft hard standings and shelters, AA positions, ground defence Bunkers, a fence and obstacles, a control tower, a main hangar and an admin building.  It was busy!

Vanvlak's idea of a crashed landa is a cool addition!

I made it on a 2ft x 2ft board so I could plonk it down anywhere on the board, and also it covered a reasonable amount of real estate even though it was too small in scale (Didnt want it taking up ALL the table!).  I used a polystyrene foam base, sculpted as required and covered with plaster before painting and flocking.  This allowed the bunkers to be dug in realistically.  The edges of the terrain were chiselled down so it dint look silly as a stand alone.

Regarding the 40k-ness of the airfield:  I think the suspensors in "Execution Hour" were the 40k verison of the arrestor cable.  Used where necessary (on naval vessels) but the cheaper, low tech solution is just a long runway.  You could incorporate a skijump type assistance for takeoff though.  To make it easier, you could have access tunnels to underground facilties like hangars.

In the meantime just keep imaging

Through imaging- we become inspired and motivated!

Building it would be a great opportunity to do an article as well- Good Luck!!

There is a nice photograph of an Imperial Airfield in ForgeWorld's Imperial Armour II.

Tas,

It would be great if you could draw up some a basic layout of the runway and trafiic ways and send to me.  Something really simple in paintbrush or powerpoint would be great.    I just to get a basic lauout of a runway.  Also How long was the main runway.

I'm going to check out my Battle of Britain Books.

The Ork lander is a great idea.

Just give me time I promise it will get done... :D
