Hi All, I have grand schemes to build a modular gaming table for Epic and would like to cover each piece with a surface resembling the old OOP Citadel battle mats. I have one, but would need more area to cover all the modular sections I have in mind. Rather than get soaked on Ebay for used Citadel mats I am wondering if anyone here has experience with anything similar. About the best I have seen online are Noch grass mats which look similar but have a paper rather than fabric backing. As I wouldn't be rolling and unrolling maybe these would hold up? Does anyone have experience with these? Or something better? Thanks! |

The Noch ones wear out a little too fast for my taste. Cheap, sure, and will last you a couple games; that's all. |

Not too familiar with what the old ones you are referring to looked like but the way everyone seems to go on and on about deepcut mats they appear to be the hotness. maybe check if they have something you like? |

I've done a bit of looking, as far as I can tell they were as custom velour fabric that GW commissioned. I haven't been able to find anything close online or in fabric stores. |

There are Javis and Woodland scenics mats which I had vague plans of using on a tiled board, mainly because on that case I figured paper would be easier to attach. But I have no idea if they would be hard wearing (I doubt it). I have the cloth citadel mat myself, it is really very good (if a little too "green" for a modern board). It's lasted me many years and still looks brand new. I'm pretty sure they actually made two versions, one was on paper, so watch out if buying on ebay. Antenocitis Workshop used to do a "Mat 'o war" that was similar ISTR, looked good quality. BUT if it's green you want, you might want to consider artificial grass... I have seen low pile height options (e.g. 3mm or even less) which could well work. A quick search: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Artificial-Tem ... 07W844KLH/ You can also get it in tiles: https://www.amazon.co.uk/GLOGLOW-Synthe ... 07D3SQFH6/ |

@Parintachin - Thanks for the advice! I was hoping someone would steer me away if they were fragile. @jimmyzimms - What I am looking for has a bit of fuzzyiness or bristle to it, not a pvc or mouse pad surface. They do have some nice mats I would like for BFG though.... @Dave - I am glad to see I am not the only one who has searched and come up empty. It is odd that these mats seem to have been universally loved, but then vanished. @Kyrt - I did find the "Mat 'o War" in my searching but it looks like it is discontinued as well. Having spent countless hours gazing at White Dwarf many years ago I am afraid I have been imprinted to desire green battlefields! I will try to find some artificial grass and see what it looks like in person. |
