What do you look for in buildings?

I am working on some buildings for my 6mm gaming and wonder what you all like and don't like in your buildings.

I am fairly new to 6mm so I don't have a good grasp yet of the pros and cons.

Do you like tall or short buildings? Do you want your buildings to have a large footprint? Do you want to use the interior of your buildings or do they just block vision and lines of fire?

Do you theme your buildings are do you have a wide variety? How many buildings do you normally use? Is your table full of buildings or do you just have a few to represent a settlement?

What would you like to see in 6mm buildings that you don't see now?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

That was a whole lot of questions. I think many, maybe all of them have been discussed in some threads here. If you are already in the know of these Kickstarters etc. then maybe kick off with a poll? Me myself I like big buildings. Footprint as well as height. Industrial brutalist designs preferably. Pieces should be practical, ie not fragile and amenable to placing models on.

A flat room helps for game play, however that is not a major criteria. Of course I prefer some more alien looking structures in my inventory along with Terran structures ... And yes, structures should able to be "entered", ie.: that's where the flat roof comes in. As well as block LOS ...

Bulk standard building wise I try and have a mix. Tall, short, wide, thin, T shape, L shape, H shape. My collection includes the original AT polystyrene, 2nd ed card, EA ruins, Battlescene and waiting on the ones from Wastelands Kickstarter.
Depending on what sort of table you are going for, I did some sketches for a full city board (6x4) and assuming a building size of 10sqcm, you would want about 40 to give reasonable coverage (also depends on large structures like cathedrals). Something like this:

I agree with Legion that a flat roof is useful but not required, especially if it opens up more interesting designs.

We seem blessed at the moment with several people making decent 6mm buildings, but most fit into the tall, square gothic look. Again, like Legion says, for me it would be the interesting shapes that catch my eye now. I am especially looking for 2 things at the moment terrain wise (not specifically buildings):

1 - Industrial, refinery, chemical plant type stuff. Distillation columns, piperacks, storage vessels/tanks/spheres, flare stacks, gantrys, cranes etc.
2 - Rail/train. A decent and cost effective rail set including, track (straights, curves, points), locos, wagons, carriages, loco sheds, stations, stock yards.

Nope, for those types without flat roofs, we place the figures on a paper card next to or on top of the structure. Not all the "YahooZ" here like Alien structures like me ... ;D But if you want pics ... he's a little out of the way place, I call "Whoville" ... Image :P

@Legion 4: I've seen the other pictures you have posted. I'm not sure I have the talent to do buildings like those, but who knows, I might try. Whoville is great. I like the look of it a lot. Any chance you have a picture of those with an epic model for scale?

@Mattman: Nice workup there for the table. Great stuff. Gives a good idea of what I should shoot for. I also like industrial type stuff. I will definitely try to do some stuff like that. I'm not sure about a train though. Might be outside my abilities. The track should be easy enough though. Possibly Z scale track since I think N scale would be too big.

My first draft of stuff is generally old school orky/middle eastern-esk. I will play more with them and see what I can do. Are there many suppliers of 6mm buildings in the US? Most I see are in Europe and shipping can be killer.

Cheers Sean. The DZC gaming boards coming out from Games and Gears should be pretty sweet for city fights, even if they are meant for 10mm scale.
I have spent a lot of time looking at trains and Z would be the best, but you might be able to get away with N (with a bit of conversion work) as everything is bigger in the future ;D ;D
Track at Z scale is easy to get your hands on, it is what sits on top that costs a packet. Locos are £100+ and simple wagons are £25+.
There is a guy doing 1:285 scale train stuff on Shapeways which I might end up pulling the trigger on, just wondering if anyone else is going to try their hand. :-\

@Legion 4: That works great. The buildings are smaller than I thought. Glad I asked.

@Mattman: Maybe I will try to come up with something. I'm creative and if there is a lack of options maybe others would be interested.

Do you think Buildings that are 2"x2" or 1"x2" are a good start for a settlement kind of thing?
