Post subject: | Scratch built scifi settlement - UPDATED 8/5/14 |
Hi all Here is a 6mm Scifi build I did a couple of years ago and thought it was worth posting it here as i'm quite new around here (and if you haven't seen it elsewhere already). Scifi settlement The buildings will all be made from household crap I've been hoarding for a while along with bits of packaging and plasticard. I'll add details to them using spare 40K bits, Grendel radar dishes, pieces of sprue, brass tubing, plasticard and an old Star Wars AT-AT walker. I've got a spray can of pearl white which I will paint all the buildings with and detail them with a purple contrasting colour (maybe). The layout is designed so the bases make a hex shaped settlement with one spare piece or I can split it into 2-3 smaller settlements. The roads are all triangle shaped plasticard pieces I had spare after making a bunch aircraft hex bases. The bases are 3mm MDF which I cut up and by hand (it was pretty tricky measuring these and cutting these so they fit together smoothly). I'll cut a small hex piece for the center and that will be a comms tower of some sort. ![]() Housing bases These are made from deodorant lids and a plastic bit that comes from a pizza! Obviously lots of details need to be added to disguise the original pieces. I'm short one lid so I need to go and buy another deodorant can... ![]() Administration and hydroponic base I'm using a couple of spare CNC boxes as a hydroponic greenhouse with a spare bit from the AT-AT walker. This will add a splash of green to the settlement. The command base is a lid and some kinder egg pieces which I need to add lots of details to. The bit on top of the brown lid is a GW flying base. ![]() Entrance and Launch pad I mostly used bits from the star wars kit of these bases as the feet off the kit make perfect landing pads. The plan is to add a fence around the base to stop the local wildlife getting into the base with a large gate at the entrance. ![]() Cheers Kieran |

The second part of the original build I've details all the buildings and painted some and it is a bit easier to see the details once they are painted. I dont think the mining settlement will make the cut as I haven't been concentrating on that as the building have taken a lot of time. Note not all the details have been added to the base and I will add more after they are painted and the basing is done. I used lots of textured plasticard, sprues, cross stitch sheets and spare bits and pieces for the details. I've had problems with some of them staying on as the plastic on the lids doesnt take glue very well and the details tend to pop off. Landing zone ![]() Food plant (the Greenhouses will be added later) ![]() And painted with the basecoat ![]() Settlers houses (one of these will become a hospital) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Command Center ![]() ![]() ![]() Gatehouse/Entrance ![]() ![]() Comms tower ![]() ![]() Powerplant ![]() Thanks Kieran |

The third part this installment Here's my 6mm Scifi settlement. I have add a fence and a gate for the entrance but otherwise they are complete. They are quite hard to photograph with the gloss paint and it is hard to see all the details in the pictures but here they are. The Decals are Eldar 40K ones with a few i-94 Enterprises numbers. The whole settlement ![]() ![]() Command Center ![]() ![]() Gatehouse/Entrance ![]() ![]() Landing zone ![]() ![]() Food plant ![]() ![]() Settlers houses (one of these will become a hospital) ![]() ![]() Comms tower ![]() ![]() Powerplant ![]() ![]() Update More to come on this topic as I had added some walls to the bases since I originally wrote this thread and added more buildings. Cheers Kieran |

These are wonderful sir very well done, i love the modularity and the way they all go together to make a single colony style piece. Look forward to seeing more. |

These are awesome. Something different to your typical Gothic buildings we see on here. Matt |

Thanks guys. Yeah I was deliberately going for something that wasn't Gothic and more futuristic than your typically GW style. I have made a Landing pad, Mine, Military Outpost and a few more bits which I will post soon. |

That looks superb! Good use of AT-AT modelkit parts. You have a good eye for scrap. |
