Post subject:  How do I scratchbuild rocky terrain?

As the subject states, I'd like to build some pieces of rocky terrain sometime soon (anyone who has seen by battle pics knows all my hills are low grassy numbers) but can't think how to go about this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers!

aside from actual rocks ;) you can get pretty good results with blocks of polystyrene foam and a poly cutter.... don't have any pics unfortunately as all my terrain was binned years ago :( I just mooch off epic uk these days....

rocks, polystyrene or scrumbple up paper/card into a rock shape and then cover in tissue paper / kitchen roll sheets dipped in watered pva.

I was thinking of rocks but I'm rarely out of the city to get a hold of any! :(

On the other hand, a bus fare would probably be cheaper than investing in a cutter & polystyrene! :D

Then again, Apoc's idea is acchievable, I have kitchen roll & pva! Project looks to be on!

Thanks chaps! ;D

Most UK cities are made from rocks, materials with rock like properties, or materials that look a bit like rocks when smashed up and painted ;) the world is your rock!

neither taccom nor myself endorses damage to public or private property in the search for rocks or rock substitues

When I think of rocky hills and other terrain I think along the lines of something like this

I've used tree bark as well on a couple of bases that I've done.

Dave speaks the truth. Bark makes the best eroded rock I've ever seen. You should...umm, borrow, some bark from a local playground and throw some spackle at it and see what comes out. The thing I love about DIY Sci Fi is that you literally can't do it wrong.

Haha! Thanks for the tips and inspiration guys! There's a large park near where I stay, I'll have a wee rumage around to see if I can find some nice chunks of bark! Like Yogi Bear I'll have to watch out for the park rangers!

By the way, nice link Jimmy, that was very helpful!

Thanks all!

Anytime brother. Read his crater tutorial as well. Very nice.

Definitely use tree bark. I made a load of these hills for 40k using bark for the cliff faces and layered styrofoam of different thicknesses to make the levels.
