Using a dinner plate, I draw and then cut a semi circle of card. This gets glued on to the box...

More card is cut to form a sheer face for the front of the base. I didn't mean for that to rhyme though...

More card is added around the sides. The box is now completely hidden. Is this is beginning to sound like a magic trick?

I score a long piece of card with a stanley blade and fold it in half. This forms the shelf that juts outward. Sadly I didn't realise that this sloped so much until the model was finished. I've also cut another big section of card and mounted the whole thing on to this. At this stage I realised I wanted stairs running up the front of the base. I had to take the stanley knife to the card and cut sections to create a rough slope upon which the staircase will be built.

Recycling toilet rolls to form tunnel entrances for vehicles to access the shelf...

At the rear of the base another toilet roll forms the exit main tunnel for vehicles entering the compound. A series of tunnels within the rock will connect this to the shelf and the upper level.

I needed a lot of polyfiller to build the rocky walls. Thanks Poundland! The staircase is formed by slapping on more filler and shaping it with an old dinner knife.

Loads of filler forms the basis for all of this "rock"...

2 coats of spraypaint later... Note also more recycling of toilet roll to form an entrance to go on top of the base (bottom left). The structure is inspired not by the Sydney Opera House, but the Glasgow Armadillo.

Some hand-painted detailing. (Also, I had added in pieces of plastic sprue that represent steel beams supporting the overhang).

The exit tunnel was painted black. Now with a load of silver paint it's supposed to give the tunnel a look of having being built with aluminium.

Same effect on the armadillo. I've painted the supports silver as well but am less pleased with the outcome. (I may yet repaint these black.)

Next up, a paint rinse is applied (hand-painted). This has the effect of really showing up the detail of the "rock" surface...
