I used to base buildings on old CDs. I used to have 100s of them from when I did multimedia work.

Sadly they never really worked well for buildings and so I am looking for something to base my ruins and buildings on. Ideally easy(ish) to cut and something that will avoid warping if it gets sanded.

Should I just stick to thin MDF board?

plastic card - comes in a verity of sizes but best to find a whole saler. 4x8 feet sheet is usually around 40-50$. thin enough so that its almost unnoticeable as a bace and strong enough for any thing!. didnt bother with any thing else once i found it.

Plasticard might work OK. Masonite can be good, but can warp like hell. MDF seems like it would be really heavy (and thick), but would probably work.

Will plastic card warp if you glue sand to it?

IIRC you can get MDF is quite thin sheets. Or maybe I am thinking of pressboard?

My plasticard with sand glued to it hasn't warped - though I think it'll depend a little on the glue. I don't think PVA'll be a problem, though.

Thinnest MDF I've ever seen is 1/4 in. Then again, I haven't looked hard. Pressboard seems like less heavy duty masonite, which to me would mean it simply isn't going to do the job.

I have single sheet tree terrain pieces with basically just sand and some trees and they havent warped. Only thing I found you should do if your using large flat surfaces for sand, is to sandpaper and line the side you want to glue sand to. line - just run a hobby knife across it in a grid style pattern, helps stuff bond to the super flat surface of the card. and if you REALY want you can glue 2 bases together, solid as brick, all the ruin sections from the chopped up city i did are on double thick bases and unless you purposely try to bend them , they wont budge.

Plasticard or foamboard, depending on the look you're going for. I assume the plasticard does not warp as it does not absorb the glue in most cases.

1mm for the plasticard, if you need a lot buy the big sheets of HIP sold for vaccum forming.

Is there much variation in rigidity for plasticard? The stuff I have is still quite flexible at 1mm, I seem to recall. I guess it depends how big and heavy the piece is.

1mm will have a fair amount of flex on it for a large piece, probably not good if you are sticking several large, solid, resin buildings onto a single sheet. For individual buildings it's fine, for multi-item layouts on large bases maybe use thicker stuff.

I'm considering using 1/8" vinyl tiles for mine. Cheap, durable and if any paint comes off they're grey already.

I have tiles. I haven't used them only because they are quite heavy.

prefer mdf for basing...hardware store in the area does precut shapes that range from coaster size to dinner plate...found them to be great for basing resin buildings...its 2-3mm thick from memory...very durable...

I also use mdf which is 3mm thick. Cheap and very durable, like Frosthammer already wrote.

Never tried the thinner mdf (1,0-2,0 mm).
