Just starting to put together my table for armageddon, Here are the first few pics.

Nothing has been stuck down and it needs some paint thrown at it.

Thanks for the feedback.....

I have now got to my usual point of questioning myself and thinking about starting over.

Just seen a picture of some of the N scale models people have used and I am tempted to go the route of purchased buildings.

anyone have any experience with N gauge buildings, I have noticed a few being used but I would have assumed them to be far too out of scale?

I like your work!

The cool thing about seeing inspiration is that it can give you great ideas and things to copy!

The bad thing about inspiration is that it can frustrate, intimidate, or fool you into thinking that your version isnt good enough.

Your board looks great! I really want to see it further along! If you need to redo it, do it, but if you can modify or do a different board with the inspiration you've seen, that might be a better alternative.

That being said, Im interested in hearing more about N-scale buildings. I use a lot of JR Miniatures buildings, myself...(1/285 scale)

I am thinkng of using the model below as a centre piece for a city in various states of destruction, it is N scale which i believe is true 10mm scale and wont look bad against epic minis

After a long discussion with the missus about little polystyrene bits floating around the house we have ahem "agreed" to this being the final table I will put together so I need to be happy with it ( not sure this ill be true tho).

on the upside she has agreed not to look disaprovingly at me or make mention of the cost

so basically I have a freehand to do what I want without a budget (well what I can afford is a limit but she wont say anything)

Im currently looking for some ideas on the following

1) ground type - I would like to get away from my usual green boards and trees, currently thinking desert/messa or volcanic terrain.

2) using rocky spires and crystal formations instead of forests

3) 6'x4' board made up of 12 x 2'x1' boards with terrain fixed allowing for various setups.

I am also thinking that with these smaller modules I can approach each as a 40k board on a smaller scale allowing for more detailed work.
one of the reasons for this is that I dont fancy doing an entire city board but would like some sections that can represent the edge of a city while allowing outposts to be placed further aay

Any ideas you guys have would be well appreciated and I will try to update my progress for those that are interested

Thanks

Post subject:  Re: armageddon table

working through some ideas for the table and I am slowly getting a picture in my head.

the basic idea would be to have the board split into 2' BY 1' sections, as i intend to build the terrain pieces on the board this will help with repositioning the boards for variation.

surface texture would be made to look jagged and rocky with messa type outcrops, rocky spires and high hills breaking up the board, with tracks climbing over the larger hills allowing quick movement and potential ambush points.

I am thinking of using the chapel shown above along with the ruined buildings already built along one short edge of the table as the remains of an imperial shrine with cratering from artillery and orbital strikes across the table.

Now my missus has to put up with the mess I make and in a stroke of genius (for me anyway) I pulled out her old Necron army the other night and happened to mention rebuilding it for epic.

Now with my new helper wanting to build a necron themed boards she has came up with the following additions I think would be pretty cool features.

fissures in the ground painted using lava techniques but in the necron green energy colours and green crystal formations instead of woods possibly lit from below with LED's.

also a diorama based on a mechanicus digsite and entry to a necron structure. this would be painted to be much newer than the city ruin sections and also possibly a mechancus staging area among the ruins for the dig site.

unfortunately I am pretty useless at drawing or using sketchup or I would post up some sketches of the idea

I would love to hear what thoughts you guys have on this idea and any suggestions for pieces that could bring the board alive, as i suggested above i want to approach each of the sections like a 40k board and intend to detail them up as such although frustration may get the better of me on that point (cutting brass rod for spent bolter shells may be the end of me!)

If your going to have a ruined imperial shrine/built up area in place then i think you will still need to have a normal human road network, or at least the remnants of one. How old do you intend the ruins to be as at one time the planet had to be amenable to human life. The ideas you have come up with sounds interesting and i look forward to seeing the results.

I am thinking of ruins dating back to the final days of the Horus Heresy. I think your right about some sort of road network allthough in keeping with the board and age it would mostly be destroyed/damaged sort of post apocalypse fallout type
