while i await the rest of my models to arrive (and more importantly, the inks to paint them) I have been making a few bits of scenery.

Firstly, a few crops/scrub. gotta do a little more work on them, but they're pretty good for what they are (and what they are is incredibly quick and easy to make)



Secondly, some ruins. i love me a good ruined city, and so to complement my SM/2 era buildings, i have begun making some ruins. an hour or two, some power tools, some MDF and some paint, and here's what i have so far. I was going to base them, but i decided they will be much more usable if i didnt. so i think i'll wait for now. I'll probably make some Ashphalt style tiles to place them on, with rubble and maybe roads, but thats another project. I've also stuck an Aquila on one of the ruins but that's temporary, not sure if i like it or not.

Nice. What is the scrub made out. A quick tutorial, please

the scrub tutorial would go something like this: (note: i stole this from a FOW wheat field i saw once)

1: Buy a Door Mat of Suitable Design.
2: Chop Up Into Small Bits.
3: Ruffle Edges to Get Rid of Loose Bits and Spread Out Top Slighlty
4: Play (And Gripe About Bits Falling Off Onto Table)

(note: steps 2 and 3 should be done outside, preferably in someone elses yard, as it is quite messy. step 1 should probably take place in a store of some kind, and step 4 is really up to your normal patterns)

the full process involves using some PVA glue (and sand/sawdust) to go around the edges, which when painted, makes for a bit better hold on the stuff (so less falling out) as well as disguising the rubber underneath
the foliage can also be painted (via running a stiff brush like a washing up scrubbing brush with craft paint through it) this also helps with the falling off (which is to say, between the two of them, basically eliminates it) but due to the rough nature of the painting, results in a fairly one-tone colour. experiments with washes and inks continue.

well, a load more buildings and ruins arrived a while back (to the point where i can now field about two fairly heavily urbaned tables) so i havent put much more work into the scenery aspect of the hobby
however, i did recently purchase a model with the intention of modifying it into an Epic scale Cathedral. it seems it will be a bit more work than i'd hoped (mostly because of the way the buttresses fit together makes it impossible to assemble without them in place, and having them in place makes detailing and painting it tricky)

anyway, here it is. not bad for $30 and a few hours to put together

i'm thinking i will change the sloped roof sections into something flatter (so infantry and whatnot can be placed on it) and over the next billion years i will texture and detail and paint it all up nice. but for now i think its pretty awesome

its a damned awkward thing to put together, i had to do a lot of trimming and clipping in places (and several of the struts needed to be bent and glued into position)
but its the nicest one i've seen, so i had to grab it. unfortunately, the auction is over, but the seller did have 9 more left, so if you messaged them you could probably get them to relist

!! awesome piece, will order one next week. would you be able to assemble it without those peaked rooves and replace them with plasticard?
Also, those 'glass widow' designs how are they created, etched in or something?

I'd just be texture spraying then fixing it up with some detail and colour.

that one is quite different to mine. i belive it's made with foamboard, while mine is made from balsawood. that one looks like most of the depth comes from the printed pattern, while the one i got has multiple layers of wood. as to how that one assembles, i couldnt say (but at $15 including postage its probably worth the gamble to find out!)

my one you can definitely remove the peaked roof sections (and the tower for that matter, though it looks rather bare down that end without such bits) and my plan is that i will probably make a small slope from plasticard or more balsa, that flattens into a wider flat piece, that infantry and whatnot can stand on. since the majority of it fits together without glue, those portions will be fairly easily dealt with, its the other parts that i am concerned about (most immediately, the bits now protected by the buttresses and arches that have been glued in place.

the detail is simply printed onto the wood, so my plan would involve making my own stained glass window pieces out of celophane i suspect. quite a task (and one i am, frankly, ill equipt to deal with. in all likelyhood i'll just give up and use it as is)

due to the layered nature of its construction, a fair amount of plaster/plasticard/spackle would be needed to seal off the plugs and exposed ends of the wooden strips, which is something that simply cannot be done until it's assembled, and once it is, the assembly makes certain parts very tricky. i had hoped that the fiddly bits would be easily removed, so as to complete the majority of work before they got in the way, but alas they are the part that needed to be glued in place.

in all likelyhood i will end up simply plugging the gaps, texturepainting over the whole thing, windows and all, but that does seem like a pity.

ok, so i am running a tournament in a month and a half, and i need to get into gear with my scenery making, as well as model painting... even though noone appears to be coming :(
so here are a few other bits i've recently done

first up, some landing pads

then a comms building to manage them

and somewhere to put the planes in the meantime (they used to have scored roller-doors but the spraypaint smoothed those over. am considering/planning to stencil in numbers on the tops)


also made some walls out of a bunch of CoD terrain i acquired for the purpose.
