I tried experimenting a bit with that many moons ago (something like 15 years ago actually ....yeeech! I'm getting old!), although using old brush bristles instead of these fibres.. Basically the trick is to not make the trees too tall as there's a risk you'll drop all your fibres from the wire when you start to twist it. Instead of the hairspray you can also dip your tree in floor varnish and then roll it in flock. It produces a more durable result, but it also requires that you use a stiffer, thicker bristle type, such as that you'd find on a discadred paint brush (or just buy a large new one at the DIY store. Plenty of fibres and they're not really that expensive).
