Thanks guys!
This has been a multi step project. As usual I started out with an embryo of an idea that kind of morphed a bit out of proportion. I had gotten fed up with our battlefields always looking the same. Especially our pre cast hills annoyed me, so I started out with making a lot of hexagonal hills that could be assembled in any way. I had also gotten tired of the minis sliding on the hills, so I made them terraced. Then I wanted to expand our collection of forests and obstacles (the lave stream) and found that I didn´t have the energy to do 4x4 inch hexagons, so I made blocks of three instead. At that point I thought, hell why not cover the whole board while I´m at it. So I made the larger 12 in hexagons, but had to also cut out smaller pieces to make the small hexagons fit to the large ones.
A good suggestion is of course to paint the edges bordering to grass green. I should have thought of that!
The central fortress is all made up of
Daemonscape resin models that I ordered on-line, painted up and placed on a flat grass area. Well, almost all of the pieces. The very central bunker was ordered from a polish company
Wargamer.
Now, the real super-bonus of modular terrain is of course the versatility and endless possibilities of recombination (I´m a molecular biologist so I tend to drift towards these kinds of solutions). The terrain is also very easy to store. The down sides are the unavoidable cracks between the pieces. Annoying, but a trade off in this case.
Cheers!
