I am trying to figure out a decent layout for my city fight table, and this gave me a lot of ideas. Will follow for sure. I think I have to visit Holland with my armies

Hi Lead-Space,

Even though I used 30x60 cm modules, it is not a very flexible setup. From the games we played on it, it was clear it favors some army setups, while hurting others. It is not very vehicle friendly, while infantry and ignore cover weapons are very good indeed. I would probably not make another modular board for Epic (not only because storing the board is a biatch)

Anyway, I've painted and sanded (very coarse sand) most of the module. It sure looks a lot better this way.

Tonight: sealing the sand with another layer of thin paint.
Tomorrow a game against Engmir. :D

Great stuff! Those craters really bring the whole table together nicely. Will be nice to see some action on this board.

Looks great - looking forward to seeing it finished.

When we've played on building heavy setups we have usually modified the cover saves down a bit for that game. In particular weoften don't use the -1 to hit for opentop ruins.

Think they look great. The coarse sand gives them a nice lunar landscape / post apocalyptic ash fields look about them!

The board is looking good! I like it! :)

What about two additional tiles where it is just open terrain that could be put in middle of built up areas (like a park etc) to make it more interesting. that way both sides get some cover plus if you drop an objective in the middle of the open ground it was usually the clincher for win or loose and ideal area to have some close combat action. It means both sides can't just sit and hide and shoot at each other at a distance.... :spin

I got some more work done.

The coarse sand is sealed in with a second layer of paint. The rubble has gotten its first layer of a rougher kind of sand, left over after running everything through multiple sieves. I will than add some more layers and rougher elements (small stones and kitty litter) to increase the rubble hight and give it more depth.

I've also made a few more stripes of modeling clay which i use for broken floors as a result of collapsing buildings. The broken clay will also get a layer of watered down pva glue to strengthen them against "battledamage" ;D

Here are some pics:

And a larger one. I hope it wont break forum format.

edit: Appears to be working!

I'm sorry to hear the table isn't as balanced as you might have wished. Are you playing a version of epic that gives bonus movement to roads? Can you think of anything that might help fix the problem?

Aesthetically pleasing collapsed floors there. Stealing that idea! What clay did you use? Thinking about using a mix of green stuff and milliput myself.

Looks great so far. Should be a pleasure to fight in, and infantry should be performing well in cityfights.

Very inspiring. I have been working on some buildings and thinking about a city board. This is a very different direction than I was thinking but looks great. I would love to see a couple of armies in action on this board.

Cheers for all the nice comments guys! It keep my motivation up.

@jmw23. Balance is often an issue with modular layouts, because most things are set in stone. A table with a lot of rubble and craters gives infantry a completely different role, becoming as tough as most tanks. Shooting is far less important and firefights become way more important, because otherwise you will never get rid off enemy formations.

@Nitpick. I used modeling clay. It is the kind which hardens on its own, instead of baking it in an oven. I think it is also used for making dolls and such. it is a bit brittle, so you need to harden it. I've applied multiple layers of watered down pva glue on all clay elements (craters an floors).

Work will continue tomorrow.

Hi Everyone,

Time for an update.
Progress has been rather slow, with real life stuff and a sh*tload of cutting pvc strips to form floors for the buildings. Who knew that would take that much time. I think I spend well over 8 hours cutting corner pieces ::) . Ah well, the results are satisfactory so it its time well spend.

With that done, the construction phase is nearly coming to an end.
I'm still undecided about adding more rubble (sand) to various pieces of the board. any thoughts are very welcome.

I've also started experimenting with the colors i want to use. Since I don't have an airbrush, it's all going to be done by hand. I really want to start painting asap!

The crater I've done definitely needs more brown. The buildings are going to have multiple colors because I really do not want a monochrome table. I did that once before and it's looked to flat for my taste (sorry, that one was destroyed :( )

Finally, a small start for the compulsory "large statue of the Emperors finest"
