A wax print means you don't have to spent hours cleaning it up since it'll already be smooth. I've seen companies who also cast in resin and plastic use wax prints, so it's not only for metal casting.
White Dragon Miniatures is one such company. As for the wax melting, it's a bit stronger than that, I've heard stories of it even surviving the casting process. Besides, if there were anything wrong with the model upon delivery, just contact Shapeways, and they'll send you a new one.
