Tons of PDFs of building terrain. Scalable too since they are in PDF format

awesome! :)

so who volunteers to craft those into CAD?

seriously: is there a way to get those into CAD to use the existing edges? only thing left would be to make it 3D. Is there an easy way to do this?

cheers,

Terrain section is already a graveyard for half-realised CAD imperial city stuff, not sure more will help.

But anyway, the files are a bit of an odd mix. In some everything has been rasterised, including the fonts, in others there are still some vector elements and individual building sections are isolated (so in the first one, there are 10 image files/links making up the main net + the tabs as vectors) but the 'images' themselves are, unsurprisingly, rasterised, so you'd need to trace them to get any lines outside of the basic fold/cut edges.

This is what happens when you just import the raw image data and turn it into a heightfield... it's like a bad TV signal.

You'd have to rebuild it from scratch, and frankly, terrain doesn't sell.

I'm not interested in selling, I'm interested in building myself a huge city :)

assuming I make a CAD model from one of the pdfs, what would the next step be? Matter printing? Are there any other (cheaper) ways to get actual miniature buildings from a CAD model?

PS: sorry for thread highjacking...

It would be pretty expensive to matter print buildings like that. You're talking the best part of a thousand pounds to make a "huge city" I'm sure.

the best idea would be to make a modular set of walls which could be assembled in multiple ways to form various buildings, matter print the originals and then make resin casts from those.....

As Hawk wargames intend to sell a range of resin buildings using his free templates as a source for your own CAD projects is a bit naughty don't you think?

well I'd gladly buy from Hawk wargames, but alas they supply the wrong scale. So it's really their fault, not mine :P

@E&C: i was thinking about printing one of each, then casting them. But is still very expensive probably... :(

I was demonstrating how it's impossible to use the Hawk templates, not facilitating anything.

Figure about £50 per building slab, I guess, depending on size.
You'd get noticeable striations for that price. Quintuple the price to print in high def i guess.

Wow ! Very nice. Very surprised Hawk are giving these away for free - certainly wasn't cheep to produce and surely cuts into sales of their forthcoming terrain sets...?! Would have thought there was some value in selling pro-printed versions via already set up online store for those who can't/don't want to afford the resin? Fair enough - their business plan...

But i agree - CAD-CAMing is a dead end. Finding vector street-scapes is the easy bit... :-)

Looking forward to some awesome city tables appearing on taccoms very soon...

I think Hawk is playing this really smart. They know you need buildings to play, so they remove the buildings from the start up cost of the game by releasing PDFs of the buildings. Then they indroduce flat-pack terrain (presumably similar to the Malifaux terrain) for those wishing for a sturdier solution that is still inexpensive, and resin terrain for those who want more expensive, but really nice terrain. Thus they cater to each of the demographics.

I really don't think the PDFs will cut into terrain sales much. I've built one up (I can post pics later if it's desired) and they would need some serious reinforcement to be anything but a temporary solution. And that's on 90#/162.7gsm cardstock. They are more to whet the appetite of most people than to provide a permanent solution.

I put together some of these already. I am impressed. They look great!

Lessons learned. The '5x3' name does not indicate actual dimensions. I think they refer to the amount of panels needed to build that the resin buildings will comprise of.

Looking at the printouts, I think these are actual photographs of painted resin buildings. If that is the case, those are going to be amazing.

These are easy to manipulate in Photoshop for kit bashing. What they gave is essentially everything you need to create any building you want. Big Joy! It would be very easy to resize these for 6mm.

Only complaint is that the buildings are too 'new' looking. For being abandoned for 170 years, they are still in good shape. After watching 'Life after People' too many times, I am wanting buildings covered in vines and with burned areas. In their pics on the website, they have a ton of buildings exactly like that. Oh well, looks like I will need to photoshop some in.

All in all, these buildings are great. I would have actually paid for these, so having them be free is just incredible and actually pumps me up for the game. I cant wait till I get my book.

<NOTE: The 15mm minis are for scale. This is a 10mm game>
