Hi Guys,
Having been experimenting recently with some terrain and basing etc, I had to do ruin, basically had some building bits left that i didnt want to waste, i was looking for stuff to use as a basing material to show rubble, stones etc.

Having a look about could not find anything around the house other than standard basing material and this was to standard for me as the sizes where pretty much to uniformed.

Then i had a ureka moment " COAL " Honestly its the best thing i have ever used and it bonds really well with pva glue to subject matter.

First of all take a decent hammer and place the piece of coal on a hard surface, break it into sections then keep going untill you get tiny pieces, you can vary your sizes, its cheap, glues well and the texture when painted look awesome!

Try it for building rubble and see what results you get ;)

Regards epic

Crushed walnut bedding is another good one.

I recall hearing that sprue put through an old mincer makes good rubble

"Old" being a key word. I can see it though.

I use a mix of sand, coffee grounds, torn up old teabags and crushed eggshell - but that's more urban earth with some rubble in it then actual rubble.

might have to try this coal idea.

It does indeed. Can't use it for anything else after that though :-)

Coal sounds like a great idea. I should be getting plenty in my stocking this Christmas...

Pah! If that were true, I'd be personally responsible for solving US energy shortage.

I use the sprue-through-a-mincer technique, as well as Ready-mixed Concrete Patch that I got from Ace hardware, and through in pieces of brick that I got from Pegasus Hobbies. Kitty Litter gives good larger-sized rubble, as does some stuffing I got from some sandbags at a construction site :)

I have used plaster before on a 40k setup, poured onto a plastic plate and after it dry's wrap it in an old toel and smash it against the floor or wall a few dozen times. looked effective and didn't cost much, stuck ell with pva once it was fully dried.

I have used the shells from Pistacio nuts.

Step one - Eat a bag of delicious pistacios
Step two - Put all the shells in an old towel or similar
Step Three - Get rid of all your pent up aggression, by beating the S**t out of the towel with a hammer. Keep hitting until you have the size rubble you want.
