So, a friend of mine has been trying to fill out a "full" battle Company of Space Marines for EPIC, when this question came up. With a character in a Tactical formation, it can be assumed that the stand he is with, and perhaps even another, are actually his Command Squad and not a Tactical Squad, so, with three characters, you'd actually need three Tactical formations to fulfil the Tactical requirements of a Company. So, where are these Command Squad Marines drawn from? Just regular Marines? From Veterans? Since they can, potentially, be specialists as well, where are they coming from? Any Marine players know? |

As is SM1 we just put a banner/flag on one of the stands in the formation ... In SMs just like in the "real" military; Squad Leaders, Platoon SGTs, NCOs etc., come from the ranks and troops get promoted for time in grade/battlefield actions. ?Officers and senior NCOs go thru additional training to prepare them to command/lead higher level formations. So the short answer is they are "Veterans" ...  |

So does that mean they're 1st Company or that they are more like the Commander's retainers and outside the normal organizational setup? |

The Command Squad is one of the 10 Squads in the Battle Company. The appointment of personnel to the Company Command Squads means that they belong to that Company, not 1st Coy, and that they have been selected for that role due to thier experience and training. ?Remember too that some of the detail is lost at Epic scale. |

Take our (Primarch,Tas & I) word for it ... they are Veterans ... And we use the SM Leader with powerfist and no helm on Det., Plt, Co. level and the other SM Cmd figs on Bn and Rgt Cmd stands ... |

Malika's link shows it as I remember it with the various command figures from outside the company organisation, however how they got there would be through the ranks as everybody points out, I suspect that in some companies you would be able to buy your way up too

Well I think you grow up the ranks due to your skills and courage or something, Space Marines are quite uptight about that. |

Yes but Tech Marines are not part of the Space Marine companies, they are outside that system. So a chapter would have somewhat over a thousand Marines, not to forget the number of serves and servitors. |

As in SM2, we have seperate Lib, Tech, Chap, Medic SM stands and are "purchased" and added to SM dets. ... we do the same for IG Commissars Psykers, Confessors, Bn Cmd & Staff; Ork Mad Doc, Mekboy, etc. !

Agreed. I, too, use the SM leader with the powerfist to represent detachment and company leaders. I believe I based him with 4 Tac Marines, but it's understood that the stand represents an HQ unit. |

According to Insgnium Astartes, the command squad marines are veteran members of their company which have not yet graduated into the 1st Co. ?They form a special retinue for important officers (captain, chaplain, apothecary, etc.) and are not members of the ten regular squads. |
