Hi, my name is Colin, I'm a trooper with La Salle's 'Ronchamp' brigade and I've heard rumours that any IG force that have had contact with chaos forces (is there such a thing as chaos?) have been eliminated if victorious. Is this (still) true?

Hi Colin. This used to be the case, and now it is never the case. Marines used to be mind wiped and IG used to disappear. Current fluff states that this is not true. However, taking time out of the front line to talk on the internet about Chaos will get you mind wiped!  :D

There is no such thing as Chaos.

(Note: Colin showing too much interest in Chaos, eliminate him, he might have the taint)

Did they change this in Fluff or just stop saying it?

I notice some things in the fluff they change, Squats for example, where they write new fluff or just start to say it is different. Other things they just stop saying it, but do not "change" it, like the Emperor eating souls to live for example.

I dont think that there was a single point where this changed. In the original fluff, the Grey Knights and Inquisitors were the only ones who did not get wiped after exposure to Chaos. However, bits started to creep in whereby certain Marine Chapters and IG regiments had 'experience' of Chaos. I guess that the concept just became unworkable. For example, after the Heresy, all the Imperial Chapters would need to be wiped as they fought the traitor legions who employed Chaos... and that could be a problem for the loyalists!

Sometimes these changes seem to come as a new person takes over the line. The 40k universe has never been a happy place, but it has gone from Super-Dark, everyone is some shade of Evil... to ... OK there are some "good guys" sort of.

You can see this shift in the overall artwork as well as how strongly the Chaos is treated as the major "bad guy". The more Chaos, the darker it is.

In the old days, units were given the Emperor's Peace to put them out of their suffereing after exposure to Chaos.  In the original novel "Space Marine" the "3 Brothers of Trazior Hive" were honoured for their actions by NOT being mind-wiped after an exposure to chaos.

It was a cool concept, but how does it work with the Regiments and Legions fortifying the Cadian Gate and the regions around the Eye?

Maybe now its just those who get exposed to daemons and stuff...yeah, that'll work for me!  They become in effect a penal regt - doomed to be used in every major engagement until they are wiped out.

Silly fluff ... in our Epic 40K universe, we don't even consider that kind of fluff ... Hey in my War Room on my Gaming table ... I'm the Emporer !  And G/W and their goofy fluff can stuff IT !!!   :p :;):

I am somewhere between L4 and a Fanboy.

I like to know what the fluff is, but I ignore what does not fit my needs/games.

Amen! This is how I think. The "kill 'em all" fluff was one of the stupidest pieces I have ever read. Let's say that Imperium mounts an offensive to reclaim a subsector lost to Chaos (Gaunt's Ghosts, anyone?). Can they _really_  afford to kill the whole crusading army after the campaign?  :o

I'm not a fboy, but I like the fluff.  Its what makes epic, well EPIC.
Otherwise I'd just use the minis for Dirtside and psuh the Titans to one side as silly (yes, hersy I know!)

I find it annoying when the GW consistency department is not open...oh thats right, they havent got one yet...

Having said that I take or leave that which doesnt fit "my" view of the 40k universe as I see it

Seems like that is what pretty much everybody here does.
Strangely I don't really have a problem with IG wipeout after every Chaos sortie, marines being mindwiped instead (too valuable), obviously my boys have yet to meet Chaos (in fact meet anybody but that's another story :( ) it sort of fits the background, provided that Chaos is rarely encountered! What they do with all the gear left is another question. It is an inherantly wasteful policy though as well as asking what the Cadians think they are guarding against :D
Oh, and by the way Colin seems to have disappeared, wonder where he's gone? :blues:
