The hype goes like this: "This lavish, full colour book details the history of Armageddon’s three wars, told mostly from the points of view of those who were there, fighting and directing the battles. It includes dozens of maps, articles, pictures, pamphlets, posters and diagrams, to make up a comprehensive source book of information on this most fascinating and devastating conflict."

The reality? I was expecting something like the Osprey campaign series books, with battle maps, orders of battle and such. To say that the book was a disappointment is an understatement.

The whole book is written as a collection of reports and logs, compiled by some obscure scribe at the request of some obscure inquisitor. Add to it a couple of ship descriptions most likely ripped from BFG magazine and you get the picture. The book actually manages to give out less information than the fluff section in the rulebook of the boardgame "Battle for Armageddon", which is available free at the Armageddon website.

The "dozens of maps" include a few small, large scale maps devoid of any useful detail whatsoever. The "Diagrams" are mostly concerned with the increase of mutation in the chaos incursion (The first war of Armageddon).

The "pictures" look like printed color-photo positives, so 'nuff said.

The only useful info in the book is the current situation in the Armageddon. The third war of Armageddon isn't detailed at all. There's nothing about it in the book that haven't been published in more detail in WD or the website.

All this is topped with a manual of "how to build booby traps" and "what rats are edible".

Summa summarum: don't bother. I wish I had not.  :{

All sounds rather dissapointing, don't think I'll bother, especially for ?15 and seeing as I have all the Armageddon WDs....

A shame, as this could have been great, seeing what the BL have done on the Liber Chaotica Khrne book...

Thnaks for the warning. I saw this advertised and thought 'finally something with background that is worth buying'. I will save my money.

I was going to buy it, my Epic:A IG are going to be painted in the Armageddon colour scheme, and I wanted some more background about the third war etc. But now I might not bother unless I have a good look at it first.

Cheers

Chris

Let's hope they do better with E-A. ?The closest they got to Osprey was the E40K books ... pretty nice ... overall. ?We're all awaiting E-A like Christmas, hopefully they won't disappoint us, but either way I'm buying ...

I like my E-A Codex, but, yes, it is lacking. I guess you'll just have to use imagination to fill in the gaps.

The web site is great.

Stormseer,

Any chance I can get a spare scan or two of the WD Armageddon issues? I wasn't around when they happened.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Great...I had identical (Osprey campaign style) hopes for this book

The irony of you posting this less than 48hrs after I ordered it burns deeply... :(   Especially as I dont usually buy this stuff from GW.  Normally only minis

PS I'd be interested in those WD articles too.  Guess I can paste them in the from of my Armageddon Book to make it useful and interesting

I only have WD 249, which includes:
-A nice short story (5 pages) about Commissar Yarrick kicking some green butt.

-Index Astartes article listing the marine chapters, which took part in the Armageddon War as well as color schemes for each and (very) brief descriptions about battles they took part in.

-Index Astartes article about Black Templars containing all the fluff. The army list is (surprise!) in the Codex: Armageddon.

-Fluff and short histories about several IG regiments, which took part in Armageddon campaign (Savlar Chem-Dogs, Death Korps of Krieg, Elysian Drop Troops and Armageddon Ork hunters).

-A short treatise about Orks tribes with some nice color pictures (a reprint from Waagh! the Orks or 'Ere we go, no doubt).

-A battle report or rather, four battle reports combined as one about Warzone Tempestora.

There is Armageddon stuff in at least on other WD (248) and possibly in 250 also. The website has much good stuff, including much better maps than the good for nothing book and fluff about several marine chapters (Celestial Lions, Relictors, Black Dragons, Marines Malevolent, Angels of Vigilance, Mortifactors and Raptors) plus MANY IG regiments.
In fact, if you read all the stuff in the website alone you get more info than is in the book. Including a much more detailed history of the first two wars of Armageddon.

GW had the chance of making a really good and unique wargame resource. They blew it.

Great job, Maksim !  I remember some of that data from many sources. I was thinking about using some of the GZG Infantry for Elysians, Stormtroopers, etc. Again, great research job ...   :)
