I asked this in the 6mm forum, but this is probably the better place.

Who are the pilots for Space Wolf Landspeeders?

In 2nd edition Epic it was obviously Blood Claws; the army card even said, "Space Wolf Blood Claw Landspeeder Squadron". Lately, however, all I seem to see in 40K pictures are Gray Hunter pilots. I admit that would actually make a bit more sense, as you'd want some discipline in a troop type who needs to keep a little range and engage in firefights. (Rather than leaping off the Landspeeder and spitting the enemy on some pointy object.)

Has the fluff changed? Is there any "official" answer to who pilots Space Wolf Landspeeders?

If there isn't a "real" answer, I'm tempted to paint standard Landspeeders in Blood Claw colors, the more tactical Tornados in Gray Hunter colors, and the long-range Typhoons in Long Fang colors.

Do you have any idea if the fluff has changed over the years, or if Epic 2nd Edition just diverged from 40K?

Not that it matters. You've already given me the answer I was looking for. I'm just curious.

No idea, personally. I suspect it's a retcon, but can't be sure.

Yeah, probably a retcon. This time at least it is a retcon that makes sense.

But I like Dobbsy's comment: "GW seem to re-write half their fluff every few years when a new codex comes out".

This means I should go ahead and paint the variations of landspeeders with the colors of the various stages of a Space Wolf's life. It will look cool, the differing colors will make the variations easier to tell apart on the table and, if I wait long enough, at least one codex will say I'm right! ;D

It used to be, before Matt Ward butchered everything, that land speeders and bikes were driven by Assault Marines in standard codex chapters. In other words, specialists rather than noobs.

Yes ... and it's been that way since I started with Epic in '90 ... sometimes it's annoying ... other times they fix the blunders from previous regimes ... or they make it worse ... :gah
