Post subject:  Marine Chapter Composition

Hi All

Disclaimer:
I have looked on the site already, and could not find anything specifically listing the exact chapter organisation. I found stuff on Tital Legions and Pre- Heresy formations yet nothing as to current chapter setup. If I have missed it, I apologize. So here goes...

I am attempting to put a Marine Chapter together and was interested in what formations people had or know from the codex formations. Here is what I have come up with for a codex chapter. Hoping to get some input and assistance:

Please also note that numbers have been chosen to fit in with army selections that can be taken from the list.

Chapter = 1000 men (= 10 companies)
Company = 100 men
Tank drivers or gunners are not counted in the 1000 men. Silly but true.

Company #

1 - (Veteran Squad):
100x Terminators (20 stands) - as there are no rules for veterans in the epic rules I see no reason to have the 1st company in anything but terminator armour
20x land raiders
4x vindicators
1x hunter
1x Thunderhawk

2-5 - Tactical Squads:
60x Tactical Marines each company (12 stands per company)
20x Assualt Troops each Company (4 stands per company)
20x Devastator Troops each Company (4 stands per company)
10x vindicators (company 2 has 4, companies 3-5 have 2 each)
8x land raiders (2 per company)
8x Razorbacks (2 per company)
28 Rhinos (7 per company)
1x hunter (company 2)
8x Dreadnoughts (2 per company)
2 x Landing Craft (Company 4&5 - to differentiate their tactical role)

6 - Tactical Squad
80x Bikes (2 per stand = 40 stands = 80 men)
10x Attack Bikes (1 per stand = 10 stands = 20 men)

7 - Tactical Squad
60x Tactical Marines - 12 stands - 60 men
16x Land Speeders - 16 stands - 32 men
2x Typhon - 2 stands - 4 men
2x Tornado - 2 stands - 4 men
2x Razorback
5x Rhino
1x Hunter
4x Whirlwinds
1x Thunderhawk

8 - Assault Company
100 Assault Marines - 20 stands
1x Hunter
4x Predator Annihalator
4x Predator Destructor

9 - Devastator Company
100 Devastator Marines - 20 stands
4x Land Raiders
1x Razorback
10x Rhino
2x Hunters
4x Dreadnoughts
8x Whirlwinds
2x Predator Annihalator
2x Predator Destructor
2x Thunderhawks

10 - Scout Company
100 Scouts - 20 bases

Now this is all based on what I have figured for a collection. Your input however would be greatly appreciated.
- Do I need more Thunderhawks and Landing craft for instance?
- How many Drop Pods?
- Company 8 need Thunderhawks?
- Anything that I have missed?

So far the above force is just under 21000 points.

Thanks in advance.

Scout company does NOT have Rhinos.

8th company should probably have some bikes and landspeeders as all assault marines are trained in their use.

6th and 7th should probably be in about equal split of tacticals and bikes/speeders respectively (given that they can operate in both).

New Codex: Space Marines has full roster of Ultramarines in it, I'll post it when I get back home today if you want.

So far the above force is just under 21000 points.

Are you including all the required characters in there?  Every Company has a Captain, etc!

I believe there are enough aircraft for 3 Thunderhawks per company and 1 Landingcraft per company.

'ere we go...

Note (codex): transport and support stuff such as bikes and landspeeders unrepresented. Those are allocated when necessary.

Corollary (mine): if you want to maximize point values, all assault squads listed would be deployed as bike/landspeeder squadrons, all 6th company deployed as bikes and all 7th company deployed as landspeeders. In case of First Company transports also mean Land Raiders so keep in mind that you can add 10 and more if you want for large increase in total price.

Notes in italics mine and provide the obvious interpretation in game rules. Where a number of units must be split into a non-integer number of formations, it will be rounded to nearest integer.

With the above in mind, the total prices will be pretty much the lower bound of total cost possible.

Chapter Command
MAC, Lord Macragge, Chapter Master - Supreme Commander
Ortan Cassius, Master of Sanctity - Chaplain (though might count as an SC too.)
27 Honour Guard - Terminator detachment would be the closest equivalent given that they have very impressive armor and boosted power weapons
Land Raider Maximus - quite obvious
1,700 Chapter equerries and servitors - unrepresented

Approximate cost: 575

Armoury
Fennias Maxim, Master of the Forge - counts as Tank Commander or Librarian
27 Techmarines - Included in vehicle crews
95 Tech Servitors - ditto
25 Predators - 6 Predator Detachments
8 Vindicators - 2 Vindicator Detachments
9 Whirlwinds - 2 Whirlwind Detachments
12 Land Raiders - 3 Land Raider Detachments

Approximate cost: 4250

Apothecarion
Corpus Helix, Chapter Apothecary - Commander or Chaplain if you insist
12 Apothecaries - unrepresented

Approximate cost: neggligible

Fleet Command
8 Strike Cruisers
3 Battle Barges - Octavius, Caesar, Severian
12 Rapid Strike Vessels - Landing Craft I suppose
31 Thunderhawks

Approximate cost: 13050

Librarius (not Librarium? my and Matt Ward's dog Latin has failed at least one of us here)
Chief Librarian Varo Tigurius - Librarian, though could make a case for SC
5 Epistolaries - Librarians
9 Codiciers - Librarians
10 Lexicaniums - too wimpy, also shouldn't they be Lexicanii? I don't know!
3 Acolytes - laaaaame

Approximate cost: 750

Companies - Codex doesn't say that for lack of space in boxes but each company includes a Chaplain (and Captain which they do list separately for each one). Price for those will be always included. Other personnel like Company Champion, Standard Bearer and Apothecary does not concern us.

First Company
Captain Agemman - Commander
97 Veterans - Best represented as 5 Terminator formations
3 Dreadnoughts

Approximate Cost: 1825

Battle Companies
Structure of those remains almost identical, that is 6 Tactical squads, 2 Devastator, 2 Assault, Captain and (unlisted) Chaplain. Only the number of Dreadnoughts differs.

Second Company has 2 for total approximate cost of 1225
Third Company has 2 again for total approximate cost of 1225
Fourth Company has 4 for total approximate cost of 1325
Fift Company has to make do with only 1 for total approximate cost of 1175

Reserve Companies

6th and 7th has 10 Tactical squads which can't be split nicely into Tactical Detachments in E:A  Since They're dual trained in usage of Bikes and Landspeeders respectively, let's say both have 2 Tactical Detachments and 4 Bike/Landspeeder detachments.

6th also has 4 dreadnoughts for total approximate cost of 1600
7th also has 3 dreadnoughts for total approximate cost of 1550

8th company is all about Assault squads, and will have 5 Detachments of those.
Approximate cost: 975

9th company is the same but with Devastators, netting 5 detachments and impressive 7 Dreadnoughts for total approximate cost of 1700

Scout Company
This one just lists the captain and says "scout squads". 100 scouts on average doesn't sound too unusual (though it could be closer to 80 at times of war) so let's settle on 5 detachments for total approximate cost of 975 (without snipers).

So the lower approximate bound for Total Cost of Ultramarines Chapter or TCUC is 32200 points by the rulebook. It could be stretched to 35000 and beyond by adding Land Raiders, Bikes, Land Speeders and Razorbacks where appropriate.

Whew :upside: That was a long post!

The Rapid Strike Vessels would be the frigates and destroyers.

So what's the 'tail' for a Marine chapter?

Seems to me the Regimental band, the ministry of moral support, and the various scribblers... let alone the repair crews and tech-priests have been omitted from this org chart.

Or do they outsource?

That's what "1,700 Chapter equerries and servitors" are for, I suppose.

Thanks vytzka

This has been awesome

31 Thunderhawks hey? Maybe I should learn how to use greenstuff and make my own creations.

I am guessing balls with wings might not cut it however....   :))

I thought each strike crusier carried 6+ thunderhawks? (As they are used in space ops.)

They have 2 bays. Strike Cruisers.

Small fleet. Dodges at 3000 points in BFG. But I assume the Ultramarines make use of the Imperial Navy for fleet operations.

Surprisingly lean organization, then.

Maybe it's the servitors...
