Looking for information on the entire armoury/arsenal of a space marine chapter, specifically the imperial fists..... but a general breakdown would be useful.... I know there is a list for the blood angels, but are there any others? Maybe in some of the IA books or HH ones or something.....

If anyone could help me out that would be awesome (also names of captains/chaplains etc would be awesome)

I've been thinking about this myself. It's surprisingly hard to get a straight answer.

This is a perennial debate, and Rasta's list (I think it was C:SM 3e, but whatever) usually comes up. Notice that there aren't enough Thunderhawks to support the battle barges (3x3x3=27) and strike cruisers (8x2x3=48). In fact, although the only Space Marines on board a ship is the bridge crew, those 23 ships will most likely eat up a full company. Add in thunder hawks (31x4= 124) and ground vehicles, and very few of your 1000 space marines are left to actually fight!

The standard answer is that these forces aren't part of the companies. This is supported in the EA rulebook, but NOT in the list above, since the captain of the 4th company is also master of the fleet. The bottom line is that the canon is vague and subject to frequent retcons and so use whatever works in your mental picture of the fluff.

My personal view is that the ten companies are infantry only. If there were such a thing as a chapter that was at full complement, then you'd probably have close to 2000 space marines: half are HQ staff and vehicle operators, and the other half are part of the infantry list. Some people suggest that the reserve companies are mostly used to operate vehicles. Other explanations are out there, too, and frankly there's little other than your own judgment that might distinguish one from another.

It should be noted that the only full strength company appears to number as much as 109.

good stuff chaps, thanks!

only 12 land raiders including variants?

Also I don't get why so much background is written about the ultramarines, they're easily the dullest of the first founding loyalist chapters.....

I'm assuming the fists would have more siegebreaking stuff like vindicators, rapiers and thunderfire cannons....

Seems that way. Though at the time, there were only two Land Raider variants. If that many.

GW likes them. I have no idea why. I think they think having a generic hero chapter makes Space Marines more salable.

I would assume the same regarding the Fists, though they're still a Codex chapter.

The Land Raider Crusader appeared In Codex: Armageddon, halfway through 3rd Ed, IIRC.

I think the idea is that players are supposed to create their own custom successor chapters. Naturally, people will tinker with the original chapter to make their own. Having the default chapter be so basic means that the other chapters you'll see in fandom will kind of orbit around the "true blue" vision for the SMs.

It's actually a pretty smart way to do things. Also being a little boring is incentive to make your own chapter more distinctive.

Except there's all those "this is how to paint Ultramarines".

I just don't see why the basic chapter needs to actually be a chapter. The points of commonality between actually interesting chapters would more than do the job (indeed, that's what C:SM 3e DID to a large extent. The Ultramarines figured very small).

I would be inclined to think that any marines operating as actual crew rather than naval infantry (marines;)) arent part of that 100 men/company, 10 companies to the chapter situation. Just like the guys driving all the tanks; theyre just techmarines.

The Ultramarines having 12 Land Raiders in total is a bit low (the Blood Angels have 43) but not entirely unreasonable. It's the Predator that's the SMs main battle tank. A chapter tends to fight with it's 4 battle companies in different warzones, each supported by elements of the first company, scouts and armour so that'd be an average of 3 Land Raiders per 4-5k army of Ultramarines.

The latest HH book goes in depth into the 30k Imperial Fists and has some relevant information. They're specialised at sieges and fortress-building but also void warfare, ship-borne assaults and boarding actions. They are noted to use large numbers of Terminators, spacecraft (they had the largest fleet numbering some 1,500 warships) and Caestus Assault Rams
