So after some consideration of this issue my choice would be a Warp Spider formation. Warspiders appear to have several advantages over the other aspects when it comes choosing a formation for the armies supreme commander:
1. Armour 4, many other Aspects are Armour 5. 2. Firefight 4+ first strike, so less attacks coming back at them when they do get in a fight, and less chance of the Autarch dying. Reliance on FF also means you can control enemy countercharges better. 3. Scout, so they can spread well out to make them an unattractive target for artillery sniping. 4. Jump Packs and Infiltrator, which allows them to be an excellent reserve in later turns. This also reduces the overall cost of the formation because it doesn't require transports, and low cost is another positive for a formation that you don't want to commit to dangerous situations too early.
So anyone come up with different conclusions to my own (eg using mixed formations?)

Even though they have Jump Packs, Spiders are only 15cm move. That means they are not a good reserve force.
Personally, I favor a Dark Reaper autarch in a mounted (Wave Serpents) formation. The extra FF attack is 3+ and it allows you to stay at the back of the formation so hits are allocated to the Autarch last. The vehicles add speed, toughness (5+RA) and bulk units.
I would only put the Autarch in a CC aspect if the entire formation were CC-oriented so that I could guarantee the Autarch is the last unit to be allocated a hit.
My regular Eldar opponent likes a Shining Spear formation for his Autarch, and that does make a most excellent harrying and/or reserve formation.

Nealhunt is your Dark Reaper Autarch in a formation entirely of Dark Reapers? |
It depends. Sometimes I do an all-DR formation with several Falcons as a fire support formation. It's a bit too expensive for the damage it usually inflicts, but with a few Wave Serpents out front it is surprisingly durable.
Sometimes I do a FF assault-oriented formation. The FF formation is usually along the lines of: 6 DAs, 2 DRs w/ Autarch and Exarch. Mounted in Wave Serpents, it packs a bit of an AP punch so you can do the move/shoot/support combo.
One other question - why is the Dire Avenger Exarch a CC specialist? |
In 40K, DA exarchs carry a power sword (or upgraded version) and shuriken pistol.
