I want to start building an Iyanden army... I thought about buying something like the core just after christmas (ie just after I got some money etc.). But since I'm eagerly anticipating the moment that I check in at the GW online store and buy lots of tiny Eldar (and since it'll really be a major issue for me, money-wise), I'm already thinking about what to buy.

The problem is that there aren't that many Epic players around and that university takes a lot of my time, so I don't have that much play experience - but I'd hate buying something that I'll only use once (although I hope that there isn't a unit that isn't worth being used ;) ), so that's why I'm asking here. I have built a small Iyanden list and would like to know if I'd have any chance of actually winning a game with it.

Wraithgate 50

Spirit Warhost 350
+ 3 Wraithlords 175

Guardian Warhost 150
+ 4 Wave Serpents 200

Wraithlord Troupe 350

Storm Serpent 250

Night Wings 300

Night Spinner Troupe 175

= 2000 points

Buying that would mean getting an Avatar, 3 Warhost boxes, 2 Wraithlord blisters, 2 Wave Serpent blisters, 1 Night Spinner blister, the Storm Serpent and, since I like the Forgeworld models much, much more than the original SG ones, 2 packs of Forgeworld Night Wings... which would mean spending about 170 Euros :-/

The list itself... Well, I like the background, so the additional Wraithlord-formation was a must-have. The additional Wraithlord upgrade for the Spirit Host seemed pretty useful for both, giving the formation some CC support in assaults and for having only one instead of 3 BTS formations. I love the design of the Engines of Vaul and if the general idea of a portable Wraithgate hadn't been enough already then the thought of having that spirit host assault directly from a Storm Serpent would have made my decision easy as well. The Night Wings would be mainly used as a protection against enemy aircraft and the Night Spinners were chosen because a) I had exactly 175 points left and b) I felt while all the Macro Weapons should be crushing enemy tanks fast enough, I was still lacking some weapons against enemy infantry.

Sooo... any thoughts or advice?

What Formations are you keeping in the Webway? only the Spirithost?

As a general rule, I keep the spirit hosts in my army Mechanized. This does three things.
1) Your Primary formation is not subject to walk to battle in the event of the destruction of the Storm Serpent. I have had my Wraithlords fail their activiation to assault from a Storm Serpent, which was then taken down. Your largest formations should be the most independant of others, IMO.

2) Your primary formation can be extracted after combat, and
assault up to 35cm away instead of 15cm. Or you can pick up your Spirithost and go for the kill more effectively on the broken formation. You will be able to catch up to walking formations, and sometimes to slower mechanized ones.

2) My opinion on the storm serpent is a Wraithlord Troupe is better suited for a Shock troop role, at fewer points. I find CC is a weakness of many formations, especially armor, that can be frustrating to get rid of and also net you "Break their spirit" in many cases. Remember 6 Wraithlords will average 3 kills against a Tank coy. The tanks, with 6 in CC, will be able to return only 3/4 of a kill on average.

I thought about a mechanized Spirit Warhost as well... The reason why I didn't choose to pick one was its price. 650 points for a single activation sounds a lot to me, especially since Iyanden already seems to suffer from pretty expensive formations. With the current list I'd have 6 activations in 2000 points which already doesn't seem to be that much... If I mechanized the Spirit Warhost, it'd be at most 5 of them. Also, I thought that the additional Wraithlords are quite a nice addition to the formation - if I fielded the formation in Serpents, it'd be guards only.

If I had more points to spend, I'd certainly pick some Wave Serpents for my Wraithguard. I'd also think about some Revenants then. But I'm not too sure about spending one third of the available points on a single formation in a 2000 points list... Still, I'm lacking experience so I don't know if that's a valid concern ;)

Well looking at the real investment part most of this looks fine. Iyanden is the least played Craftworld to date (although they do seem to have the most interest at the moment) so I can't answer anything yet in that respect. Here's my comments on a generic purchase. Wraithlords are somewhat unproven in this list and less used in others. It might be safe to start with 1 pack and get another later. I have't had much luck or effect with Night Wings (might just be who I play) so they would be my least advised flyers to buy. I do love those new Forgeworld Night Wings and will get some for myself one day just for the models themselves.

That really surprises me a bit... Although I do see that the list still needs to be tested, I thought I'd be on the safe side with Wraithlords (regardless of how they're going to be used in later versions of the list) as Iyanden will always rely on them and their smaller nephews.

About the flyers: Well, if there was some other reliable AA unit I guess I could pick that one as well... But both, Falcons with Firestorms and Fire Prisms, seem to be suffering at least from them being ground units that just can't cover the field as effective as some fighters on CAP. What would you use against enemy aircraft?

I have to say I lean towards FPs, as the 75cm range is a good deterrant. The actual kill rate I can't say, as I've not played against flyers yet (statistically, 1 troupe has 1 kill times the rate of save failure), but the deterrant factor is a major effect, and has as much effect on game evolution as actual threat levels.

I am using Inyaden, I love the spirit warhosts, I use two one in wave serpents and one in a vampire, I am however considering using a storm serpent, I use phoenix bombers, a vampire (4000 points),  a cobra, revenant scout titans, one fire prism and two fgacon groups, a warhost, and thats typically about it.
So far two and 0, but the IG gave me a tough batle last time around, I used no wraithlords but plan to remedy that as their toughnes and ranged At have value in my opinion.
Good luck
Robert
