Starting out on my dark eldar venture but am struggling to get much out of mandrakes beyond what any unit of scouts can do (screen, cover multiple objectives) and being a 200 point (ie expensive) speedbump garrison. They lack the shooting to be an overwatch blitz guard, struggle due to low ff (even with FS), I've thought about 1-2ing them with scourges but if they teleport they're likely to be retaining on a 4+ which ain't great.

As always it will depend on the situation that you are facing. I see them more as an attack small isolated formations and/or then spreading out to grab objectives.
However, I am only 1 game back into playing DE again, so more than a bit rusty with them.

I agree with Tim. That or take outAA formations so my air assaults can come in safely.

Do scourges not just do all those things but better? Admittedly for 50 points more.

Yeah, but i need thoose 50p for other stuff. And scourges doesn't first strike which is an awesome thing!

I love the mandrakes! Models and unit and fluff! But admittedly I've had mixed success and they have never survived a game. But i tend to use them as suicide teleport bombs so hence the por survival rate. I like teleporting them in close proximity to scourges so they launch the engage and scourges spt fire then the scourges have a greater chance of surviving and fly off to capture obj and such.
I also use them to tgt isolated units and the threat of a teleporting formation in turn 2 and 3.
