Post subject:  Experience with Revenant based lists? (3K)

Looking for peoples experience using Revenants in 3k games...using the NET EA list I've got this:

WRAITHGATE - 50
AVATAR - 0
GUARDIAN WARHOST - 350
Farseer
7x Guardians
+3 Support Weapon Platforms
+3x Wraithguard
GUARDIAN WARHOST (WAVE SERPENTS) - 350
Farseer, 4 Wave Serpents
7x Guardians
GUARDIAN WARHOST (WAVE SERPENTS) - 350
Farseer, 4 Wave Serpents
7x Guardians
RANGER TROUPE - 125
5x Ranger
WAR WALKER TROUPE - 175
5x War Walker
WINDRIDER TROUPE - 200
5x Jetbike
Vyper
SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE - 250
3x Falcon
2x Fire Storm
ENGINE OF VAUL TROUPE - 250
Cobra
ENGINE OF VAUL TROUPE - 250
Cobra
REVENANT TITANS - 650
2 Revenant Titans

I've gone with the Cobra's as they add even more AA on the ground and I wanted to avoid taking nightwings (or any air) to make any points my opponent spends on flak useless whilst having plenty of AA cover on the ground myself.

If I use the Ulthwe list (colour of my army) I could drop 100pts from somewhere (drop a ranger, War Walker and a Wraithguard for 110?) in order to pull a supreme commander out of my hat somewhere?
Supposedly I'd be Strategy Rating 5 with Ulthwe too...

Hi Ryan,

I love them. They are fragile, but careful placement and even the odd chance of sustaining with Revenants is devestating for your opponent.

I tend to use the revenants as support for my main formations and wouldn't use cobras in the same list. Instead I would have another Swords of Vaul (for the AA) and 250 on whatever you like.

I would say so, do you have any Vipers, these allow the Windriders to be a more general purpose formation.

Aye...stick one in there.

I've found them to fragile enough that I have to pooh pooh around with them, never really making my points back. I'd much rather dump the windriders and get a warlock titan instead, that thing's a monster.

or a storm serpent, guardians w/ wraithguard and a fm of 4 rangers instead :)

The only time I remember you fielding them was against White Scars.

I tried them against a couple of the Ozzies (vs. IG and vs. Space Doggies) and even though I won both games, it wasn't due to the Revenants.

Does it have something to do with you never loosing a game, ever?

Hey! We have dice too! I'm changing my name!

The warlock is a VERY common choice on the UK tourney scene and I really really like the old revenant models so that's what I'm going with :-)

TIM: do you think you could expand on why you wouldn't use cobra's? The extra AA shot and TK ability really do if for me in this case. Without the revenants I'd even field 2-3 of them as a sqaudron!

That Cobra AA shot is good for laying a BM and not much else. It hits on a 6+ and a 7+ on the disengage. There are good reasons to take the Cobra but the AA isn't one of them.

Experience with the Revenants is so-so for me. I find them very fragile, but if you have a city board to play on (or tall hills) you can take advantage of terrain with the move-shoot-move bouncy attack. Trees tend not to be tall enough to protect them.

IMO the best reason to take Revenants is because they look freakin' cool and they are bound to distract your enemy with their legendary (misplaced?) prowess. Keep them just out of reach and your opponent will probably put way too much energy into breaking them while you go on objective hunts in turn 3. If you play them too aggressively you can expect your BTS to vaporize.

Post subject:  Re: Experience with Revenant based lists? (3K)

Thanks Mosc: I agree with you about the cobra AA so am replacing ONE of them for now to give the list a try: luckily for us in the UK we just play it pretty much blanket across the board that all area terrain blocks line of sight so I shouldn't have that problem with the revenants: your tips on playing with them should prove most valuable :-)

For now I have TWO choices of list it would seem. I can use either NET EA or the GW version. GW Version is below (comments after that):

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
WRAITHGATE - 50

AVATAR - 0

GUARDIAN WARHOST - 350
Farseer
7x Guardians
+3 Wraithguard
+3 Support Weapon Platforms

GUARDIAN WARHOST (WAVE SERPENTS) - 350
Farseer, 4 Wave Serpents
7x Guardians

GUARDIAN WARHOST (WAVE SERPENTS) - 350
Farseer, 4 Wave Serpents
7x Guardians

RANGER TROUPE - 100
4x Ranger

WAR WALKER TROUPE - 200
6 Warwalkers

FALCON TROUPE - 250
3x Falcon
2x Fire Storm

FIRE PRISM TROUPE - 250
3 Fire Prisms

ENGINES OF VAUL TROUPE - 250
Cobra

WINDRIDER TROUPE - 200
4x Jetbike
2x Vyper

REVENANT TITANS - 650
2 Revenant Titans

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On the plus here that means that my Fire Prism's are still nasty AA units too but they are only a formation of 3 but, hey, 60cm worth of AA isn't to be sniffed at. I also get a beefier ground pounding guardian formation this way.
No supreme commander.

Post subject:  Re: Experience with Revenant based lists? (3K)

Then we switch to the NetEA version:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

WRAITHGATE - 50

AVATAR - 0

GUARDIAN WARHOST - 300
Farseer
6x Guardians
Heavy Weapon Platform
+2x Wraithguard

+3 Support Weapon Platforms

GUARDIAN WARHOST (WAVE SERPENTS) - 350
Farseer, 4 Wave Serpents
7x Guardians

GUARDIAN WARHOST (WAVE SERPENTS) - 350
Farseer, 4 Wave Serpents
7x Guardians

RANGER TROUPE - 125
5x Ranger

WAR WALKER TROUPE - 175
5x War Walker

WINDRIDER TROUPE - 200
4x Jetbike
2x Vyper

SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE - 250
4x Falcon
Fire Storm

SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE - 295
2x Fire Storm
3x Fire Prism

ENGINE OF VAUL TROUPE - 250
Cobra

REVENANT TITANS - 650
2 Revenant Titans

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=

Less wraithguard, more guardians for the grounpounders, more rounded scout formations, an extra firestorm and I COULD put one of the fireprisms ins the OTHER swords of vaul troupe to give them a bit more ranged kick too.
STILL no Supreme commander!

Not thinking switching to the Ultwhe list is much worth is but there is still that question of getting a supreme in the guardians and an extra pip of Strategy Rating (in fact can anyone confirm, deny, or tell me why Ulthwe get that, is it "official"?)

Hi Ryan,

You've asked about my not using a cobra. I have done in the past, but you have to have the feeling that you are going to play against an army where you will the best out of it. The weapon is very specialisted and designed to take down titans. This it is very good at, but you need to position the cobra at the end of one turn and sustain at the beginning of the next to get the best effect. Against higher strat armies your opponent will either sustain first or just move away. Against lower strat armies this can work.

The other area where the cobra is great is hunting Marines. This is because the weapon uses the barrage template and the benefits of shooting at infantry.

I just prefer to spend my points on engaging formations or Stormserpents.

As Mosc has said one of the benefits of Revenants is that you don't end up throwing your BTS directly at your opponent as you would with a Warlock.
