Greetings fellow Eldar players.

To supplement my old Space Marine era Eldar force, I recently purchased the Eldar infantry boxed set, but I am having trouble deciding how many Jetbikes to mount on these 'new' rectangular bases.  In the past, it was obvious that it was two models to the square base, but with the current rules allowing three to be mounted on a base, I cannot decide whether to mount two or three on the rectangular bases.

I would prefer to use two, as this means I can put together one troupe out of the boxed set without mixing and matching from my old models (although I could add a couple of Vypers), but I have this feeling that three looks better on the rectangular bases.

What are your thoughts, and how have you all assembled yours?

I put my jetbikes in pairs on W40k bases, partly because, as you say, that allows you to put together one formation per box, and partly because my Chaos Space Marine bikes were already two to a base and I wanted to be consistent with those. If using Epic strip bases, I think you'd need three to a stand; two wouldn't look right on those. I'm not sure that the 12mmx40mm bases aren't a bit too narrow for bikes, though. I'd be more inclined to go with Warmaster bases if I were basing bikes in threes.

I was originally thinking three but I may end up with two per base as well. Even on the longer warmaster bases I think it'll work good because it'll let them have a bit of room to breathe unlike the two crammed on 20x20 bases.

The base with 3 on it will be the character up front with one on either side

This is how I am going to base all my bikes of FOW bases

2 spaced out is fine, particularly if there's a little base detail occasionally to make it more interesting. I'm going for 3 myself though, either on 12 x 40mm bases or Warmaster bases.

Warmaster Rectangular bases are intend for 3 bikes : Shining Spears blister comes with 6 bases and 18 bikes.
But this don't stop me to base my (jet)bikes two on a 23mm round bases.

All very interesting, and I certainly like the variety, but if you had to use (or you do use) the Epic rectangular bases, how many Jetbikes would you mount on them?

I only have a very limited number of the old 20mm by 20mmm bases left from the old era, and I'm trying desperately to economise, so buying Warmaster bases isn't really practical for me at the moment, and I would like to build them while I am at home.

I get the impression that three to an Epic rectangular base is standard, but does anyone think two to one of these bases would look okay, or does it just look wrong?

I usually put 3 to a base but can't see any problems with using just 2.  Just means you'll have to fill up the extra spare base with some nice looking terrain bits.

I wouldn't (and I don't) use the Epic rectangular bases (40*12) for (jet)bikes.
The base is just no width enough.

On a Warmaster base (40*20), I would put 3 bikes. 2 would make the stand a bit empty.

My personal preference for basing bikes is 3 on a 20x30mm base.

I like 3 units to make it look more like a squad.  3 on 20x40 looks really spread out to me and it takes up a large amount of space on the board.  20x30 is more compact, but not cramped.  There's still plenty of room to paint the minis.

2 on 20x20 looks cramped to me.  I have a lot of legacy pieces that are 2/20x20 but anything I build new is on 20x30.

I have a lot of Jetbikes from the Space Marine era mounted on the old 20 x 20mm bases, and I agree that they are a bit cramped, which is why I'm not going to mount my new Jetbikes on some of those old bases which I have available.

I think that the Jetbikes do fit (in terms of width) on the rectangular Epic bases, and while making alternative size bases is possible, I'm not sure I have any suitable material.  Would very thick card suffice?

Thick card works, but 1-2mm styrene is harder wearing and wont seperate along the edges/corners. If you dont have any styrene sheet look out for suitable plastic in packaging,i get my 0.5mm styrene from ice cream tub lids :agree:

Two to a "warmaster" base... actually a double-thickness wood base. I've tested using 50# clear monofilament fishing line as the 'flight' portion of the flight stand -- this seems to work fairly well to suspend the bikes about 7-10mm above the terrain.
