I like 3-4 regular figures on a large base (40x20): 'empty battlefield' thing is the fluff justification.

More importantly, flock and little terrain bits give more bang for the painting buck.

On the square bases, I think five looks best, and it certainly looks right to me when I field mine.  I think there is more room for flexibility with the rectangular bases, and four does look quite good in those photos in my opinion.
