What obliterator rules are you using? I believe the latest netEA recommendation reduces them to AA6+

Night Spinners & Void Spinners are an option. Your buddy could try using Storm Serpents as an alternative way of deploying forces, or he could restrict his flying units to areas that are outside of the Obliterator's range.

Note that since they have a 45cm range and are usually in a formation which also has 45cm ranged guns, placing BMs is not going to be that useful for supressing them. They'll usually be in the middle of the formation so you'll need an awful lot of BMs to supress them.

Indeed, surpressing them isn't going to work, you'll need to either brave their fire (and lose planes), or avoid them totally.

As Zombo said though, the NetEA project recommend using 6's for their AA stat instead of 5's, which reduces their power to more managable levels.

A strategic approach might be to stop taking so many aircraft for a while.

That 700 point could be better spent elsewhere in this case: try taking Fire Prisms or Scorpions that can hit the enemy at long range, particularly with lance and MW attacks; using Fire Storms for AA duty; heck, even shock them with a Titan for close to those points!

The disrupt of the various 'Spinners is also a good approach.

Ok not sure I can convince the chaos player to change lists but I was thinking of the firestorm /no airpower option (seems like the airpower isn't worth it ) maybe a wraith ship would be better support ? I myself was going with the waveserpent assault tactic using inderect to suppress some of the fire .

Barrages tend to be a nightmare for BL - negating the daemon shield. Either void spinners with the added benefit of disrupt or titans which even if they don't get to shoot at the oblit retinues will force them to be deployed further back (not garrisonned forward) and then you have more chance of picking off formations that move forward out of the pinned-back AA coverage.

With my eldar I always take a vampire and the assess the opponents army - good AA its a bomber poor AA its loaded for air assault. Nightwings are really dependent on your opponent as well - face an air assault list like Orks or particularily SM and they are fantastic, face IG or BL and 300pts would be far more useful elsewhere

Personally I have never found it to be that difficult to supress obliterators in chaos retinues with eldar its just a case of application of enough disrupt artillery (6-7 blast markers is generally required - might get lucky and kill one as well) its then all about the angle of approach, (edit: I should add in terms of then air assaulting them with a vampire - as in this case I am not that bothered about getting shot at on the way out which would obviously be more of a consideration with phoenix and nightwings).

If they are in terminators thats even better as they will be a smaller formation and require fewer blast markers and if he is keeping the termies back as air cover then they are not doing what they are best at which is slaughtering stuff in combat.

I actually love fighting the original black legion list because in general swiftdeaths are not that great so no one takes them and that removes a massive headache from playing an eldar air assault list. I would prefer to be using my falcons for something other than doubling over to the target of my air assault and throwing up a flak bubble.

In general though those 700pts spent on nightwings and phoenix bombers would be much better spent on any of the eldar titans, but especially if you can find another 150pts from somewhere then get a warlock which is the bane of chaos.
