I'm actually liking the idea of using the Disposable rule for brood creatures.

That could simplify things *a lot* while still retaining the flavour of the Tyranid army (And removing a whole A4 page of special rules).

Thats all I was trying to do in reality. I`m sure the instinctive rules also cover the general feel of a Tyranid swarm very well too.    Its just that rules are quite long, not that easy to follow in places (at least for our intellectually challenged group) and sometimes don`t seem that intuitive.

The orginal armies (Marines, Orks and Imperial Guard) have very concise special rules that capture the feel of the army. The special rules for the Eldar (who have a fair few) are still designed to be very simple variations on current rules eg lance takes away RA save, (the now abandoned) pulse allowed up to 3 hits etc.

The Disposable rule I feel tries to get to that level of simplicity while still trying to capture the feel of the nids.

Hi Hena,

It helps a bit I suppose.  While I think the Spawning and Synapse rules should ideally be shorter I think you have done a grand job of making them pretty concise and easy to understand.

While changing to Disposable does shorten the writing the main driver is that I feel it is much easier to understand (and more intuitive) than the current Instinctive rule.

Priority 1 should be to make the rules readily understandable.
Priority 2 should be to write said rules in a concise manner.

The Synapse and Spawing rules manage Priority 1 but our group didn`t feel Instinctive did.

Should this topic be moved over to the tyranid forum do you think ?  Cluttering up the Eldar one over here.

Thanks for the batrep woodelf_dave!  Looks like it was a very enjoyable game!

I'll comment more, but I just got back from a 7 hour drive after a late night wedding yesterday, so I need to rest... and regenerate.

Hi Chroma - I`ve tried to move the Nids discussion onto the Tyranids forum to clear this space for Saim Hann comments.  I have a game on Thursday and although I wasn`t planning to use Saim Hann (I like to vary the armies I`m playing) if there are any further changes to the army you`d like to see tried out I could give them another outing.

Spawning:Infantry=1 spawn point
                LV/AV=2 spawn points
                WE=number of DC

Do you think this might work?

Also suggest looking at Tyranid swarms only take one BM per turn, which functions as normal and is removed in the End Phase.

I think keeping spawning how it is currently (based on point cost) is the way to go instead of being based on size or unit type.  Every 20 points or so should mean 1 spawning point.

Disappionting responses:I don`t believe the answer lies in thumbing the rules during spawning;instead a visual check of the creatures doing the spawning and the dead pile would be far more desireable. For example,3 tyranid warriors=3spawn points.Using the chart I outlined above, the Tyranid player places 1xinfantry,1xAV.No dice,no distance measurement! It gets you on with the game.

Would it be possible to remove all background text to designer`s notes, stripping down the rules to their bare bones? It would make reference during a game so much easier. If not, italics or a different coloured type would be welcome.

I`m always amazed at the enthusiasm and dedication shown in composing new lists.I do believe though that the Tyranid list would benefit from wholesale rethinking;responses like"we`ve done that before"do nothing to drive the project onwards:currently the Tyranid army is no fun to play with Synapses and Fearless going to ground and army selection straitjacketed. The army moves like a mob;and the heavy emphasis upon assault leaves it  predictable and uninspiring.Combined with the questionable availability of models, we don`t seem to be going forward, leaving players like me with an expensive, dull army.

Well, first off, thanks for your input JOHNDRAGON.

Second, I'd recommend moving this discussion to the Tyranid section of the boards.

Third, Tyranids actually just had a major rethink/change in the way they're played and it's that information that is still being processed.

The change from "No Blast markers at all" to "Now they get Blast markers" is fairly signficant.

I feel that, as acting Army Champion, radically altering too many things at once will just serve to alienate (no pun intended!) players and sow confusion.

I would really like to see what your ideas for what the Tyranid army should be like, JOHNDRAGON, especially if it doesn't involve a "heavy emphasis on assault"... in my mind assault *is* the Tyranid approach, but I'm certainly willing to entertain other approaches.

Please join us in the Tyranid area!

But perhaps all background paragraphs could be done in italic, Chroma? If it helps to separate the two even more then it could be worth it.

I'll see what I can do about that in the next update... and let's take this discussion to the Tyranid section too...  :)
