Hi,
Flogus and I played a game last Sunday, and I thought I'd test the new Iyanden list.
Unfortunately, none of us had brought a camera... so I'll just give you the highlights and relevant events of the game.
We were playing with all the 1.8 experimental rules AND we used the "units with Holofields always count as being in cover" house rule.
ARMY LISTS
IYANDEN - 2975 pts
Spirit Warhost - 325 (kept in reserve) Spirit Warhost - 325 (kept in reserve) Wraithlord Troupe - 350 (kept in reserve) Swords of Vaul (4 Falcons + 1 Firestorm) - 250 Swords of Vaul (4 Falcons + 1 Firestorm) - 250 Storm Serpent - 250 Storm Serpent - 250 Nightspinners - 175 Revenant Titans - 650 Wraithseer - 100 Wraithgate - 50 Avatar - 0
IMPERIAL GUARD - 3000 pts
Regimental HQ + Hydra - 500 Mechanised Infantry + Hydra - 400 Tank Company + Hydra - 700
Rough Riders - 150 Rough Riders - 150 Deathstrike Battery - 200
2 Warhounds - 500 Thunderbolt Squadron - 150 Thunderbolt Squadron - 150
3 Commissars
The table consisted of one big city in the middle, surrounded by hills and two small forests. Apart from Flogus' Rough Riders, none of us had any garrisons.
TURN 1
Most of the Eldar army spent Turn 1 getting closer to the enemy, positioning itself for a Turn 2 assault.
The Warhounds, HQ and Mech. Inf. all moved towards the center of the table as well, shooting at the Eldar while doing so (both Swords of Vaul troupes were broken as a result).
Flogus fired 1 Deathstrike missile at one of the Storm Serpent, did 2 DC of damage and finished off the broken Storm Serpent with a ground attack from his Thunderbolts.
The Revenants doubled and fired at the Mech. Inf, killing 2 stands. I tried to follow this up by assault with one Spirit Warhost coming out of the remaining Storm Serpent, but failed my activation (of course, I had already used mu SC re-roll), so my Spirit Warhost took position in a nearby building instead.
The Leman Russ company was too far from the action to do anything this turn.
End of turn
The Revenants missile launchers destroyed one Thunderbolt.
With only 1 Falcon left, one of my Swords of Vaul formation rallied.
TURN 2
Now it's really too bad none of us had a camera, because the begining of turn 2 was quite a sight. Right in the middle of the table, we had :
- 2 Warhounds, one full HQ company and one almost intact Mech. Inf company. No BMs.
- 2 Revenants, 1 Storm Serpent, 1 Spirit Warhost. No BMs.
It was clear that whoever won the strategy roll would have a big advantage... and I won it !
First, my Nightspinners fired at the Mech. Inf. > 3 casualties, 5 BMs. Then my Spirit Warhost advanced and fired at the HQ > 3 casualties, 4 BMS. Finally, I retained a third time and my second Spirit Warhost (with the Wraithseer) declared a combined assault on the Warhounds, HQ and Mech. Inf. and assaulted from the Storm Serpent's webway portal.
Flogus managed to score 15 hits ? , but only 3 Wraithguards died (unfortunately, my Wraithseer was amongst the casualties). In return, the MW attacks of the Wraithguards killed 12 stands in the Imperial ranks. Needless to say, I won easily (with a final +10 to the combat result roll), even if my assaulting Warhost ended up broken.
Flogus failed to destroy the remaining Storm Serpent with the other Deathstrike missile, but the Leman Russes doubled and finished it off.
My Wraithlords came out of the Wraithgate and fired at the Leman Russes (2 casualties, incl. 1 Hydra), then my Revenants did the same... and destroyed 6 Leman Russ tanks !!! With only 3 tanks left, the survivors promptly retreated.
After all this, I was feeling quite confident, but I had very few formations left unbroken and/or intact(Revenants, Nightspinners, Wraithlords and one Spirit Warhost).
Flogus wasn't looking good either, but...
End of turn
... he rallied the Warhounds, Leman Russes and the Mech Inf (with only 1 infantry stand left), while none of my broken formations rallied.
The Revenants destroyed another Thunderbolt.
TURN 3
Flogus won the strategy roll.
His Leman Russes doubled and fired at the Wraithlords (1 BM), then his nearby Rough Riders assaulted the Eldar constructs... only to be annihilated (1 dead Wraithlord, 6 very dead Rough Riders).
The Nightspinners missed their activation roll (and my SC was dead), so did the Thunderbolts (Flogus decided to keep the SC re-roll for the end-of-turn rally roll).
My Revenants doubled and fired at the Leman Russ, but only managed to destroy one this time, while the Warhounds doubled and destroyed 1 Nightspinner, breaking the formation.
End of turn
I rallied my Falcons and my Nightspinners and Flogus rallied his HQ and Leman Russes.
With wery few troops left to control objectives, none of us had scored a point yet.
TURN 4
I won the initiative and my Revenants, in an attempt to destroy the Leman Russes and win the BTS point, fired at the two survivors from the tank company... who shrugged off 4 MW hits, and were left 1 BM short of being broken.
Thinking "it's ok, I only need to fire at them to break them and gain their full points value for the tie-break", I rolled the dice for my Wraithlords... and missed the activation. Of course, they were my only formation close enough to fire at the Leman Russes, and with my SC dead... Well, I guess it was Fate's way of evening things out after the turn 2 massacre.
Not much else happened during that turn : we both knew we coudn't score 2 points, so we tried to do as much damage as possible for the tie-break.
End of turn
None of my broken formations rallied.
Flogus had 1 point (Take and Hold), I had 0.
Victory points :
Iyanden > 1400 points Imperial Guard > 1615,5 points
Well, I had been able to put one more BM on those Leman Russes, I would have scored an extra 350 points, but hey...
Anyway, it was still a very fun game to play. Flogus and I both felt the Wraithguards' 3+ save is OK : they are still very tough but at least they are now vulnerable to MW fire. A formation of 6 seems to be about the right size.
Flogus never fired at the Revenants, so we couldn't test the Holofields house rule. We'll try again next time, because it feels OK in theory.
Finally, I guess I should have included some aircraft. I would have loved to have a Nightwings squadron to get rid of those pesky Thunderbolts or to act as moving artillery.
Thanks for reading, and sorry for the lack of pictures.
