Looking back at IA3, I get back to the Tetra, one of my favourites. The background states that these are often arranged in pairs, to create four man Pathfinder teams (no, I am not thinking about letting them dismount). Anyway, I then noticed again that the Epic Tetras are Light Vehicles. This appears to be a legacy issue, but I wonder why these are LV? They are the equivalent of Marine bikes, which are infantry, so why are the Tetra not infantry?

By the way, I do think that the Piranha should remain LV.

Comments?

Sure, this seems ok, CS. I'll test them next time I game.

My guess is that this comes from the Marine Attack Bikes being LVs. They're larger then single-man craft and are thus assumed to be independently targetable. Space Marine Land Speeders are also LVs even though they're only two-man skimmers which operate in trios in the field. Most assumptions are that things large enough for multiple people to ride are either LVs or AVs.

That seems fine, and I would apply the similarity between the Piranha and the Land Speeder (skimmer, two crew, heavier weapon, light support role, etc). For the Tetra, while it is still two man, I do think that it is not only lighter, but fulfils a different role. Changing it to Infantry would also go part way to represent the disruption pods (if anyone asks  :D ). The Tetra seems no larger or more armoured than a Marine, Eldar or Ork bike.

Personally, I favour Tetra as Infantry, Piranha as LV. (Mirroring the Eldar Jet Bike and Vyper.)

Wouldn't they also have improved stats if you're mounting them 2/stand?

Well, if the Pulse Rifles are twin linked, then they should get two sets rather than one pair... which is about half the firepower of a Fire Warriors unit... which is what the have now. There is an argument for doubling the number, allowing them to throw out the same firepower as a FW unit. I cant see a reason to change any other stats, though.

Certainly the main reason they were made light vehicles is they are vehicles in 40K.

However this is quite debatable and IA3 places them more in the mouted infantry section, stating they often operate in pairs and often dismount to operate as a 4 man pathfinder team with pulse carbines. And there is the disruption pod. So it's quite possible to have them infantry.

Indeed, they need to be 2 on a stand to be easily identified as infantry. But there's an issue doing so model-wise because you need 12 expensive forgeworld models to represent the 6 mandatory bases. That's 3 reckon packs to buy. So I'd suggest having the starting size for the formation 4 units rather than 6 if they're made infantry (should be welcome since their unit cost will certainly go up).

The unit sizes for the Tetra and the Piranha were set to match the packs sold by FW and, as you can't buy them separately, this is something we should continue to be mindful of.

I know this isn't a very good argument for structuring the list but there are quite a few people who have put time and effort into basing their tetras singly so changing things up now would leave people needing to re-base.

Hmm some very pertinent points here. Infantry can be based one per base though e.g the Nid Ravener. Larger infantry can be based this way I thought.

Tetra has armour values in 40k. (10/10/10). Usually that means LV (same as land speeder). Though one might think that the save would be 4+ instead of 5+.

Speeder 4+ and Viper 4+ result from their power armor or upgrade options.

So same stats but with upgrades or Power armor  more survivability. 5+ seems OK to me. same for LV.

I'd stick with LV for the Tetra.

Hi colonel, I think your point is right. I got the numbers wrong, or rather out dated: it seems forgeworld packaging has changed since I bought some. There was 4 tetras in a pack a while back. Now there is only 3 Tetras.

As to my comment, it is even worse: making the Tetra infantry teams (assuming 2 on a stand) would need 4 reckon packs to get the 12 models.

Colonel Sponz
there are quite a few people who have put time and effort into basing their tetras singly so changing things up now would leave people needing to re-base.
That means: strong community consensus required to make that change, because there's an impact on people models and you don't want it to change too often.

Just looked and it's still 2 Piranhas and 3 Tetras per pack so two packs makes one Pathfinder Tetra Support Group (6) with a Piranha upgrade (4).

Yes, but that could be two packs leading to one Piranha upgrade (4) and one Tetra upgrade (3 x2 as infantry).

The issue on basing is a serious one. I dont like making these changes if they can be avoided. But, will the fact that the Tetra are LV come back to haunt us?
