I've just read (or should that be "waded"?)through the re-worded Drone special rule. It makes me wonder, for the sake of ease and understanding - could we just count drones in mixed formations as similar to how grots are counted in Ork formations, but able to take any type of hit? We'd lose the BM reduction part but, for simplicity, I'd be happy to try it out.

It seems so overworded at present. I know a lot of contemplation has been made on the new wording but ... ooph! It's like a novel :D

A good novel, or one of those trashy ones for sale at airports?

I would be happy to try it out. The loss of the blast marker reduction would not bother me too much (since fire is still inbound and friendlies are still dropping - which is what the markers represent).

Opinions?

Ironically, that's where the rule started life a few years ago. :alien:

Really? Was there a reason it wasn't kept that way?

Probably because it was too like the grot rule, then there was debate about how to word it to cope with mixed AT/AP fire and then it wasn't enough like 40k, and then, and then...

You know, usual the development cycle.  Time for some simplification now I guess.

At least remove the 'may take AT hits' part of the rule, for that's where complication really starts. After that, why not try the grot rule plain and simple? Non drone units will still take hits nonetheless under heavy fire.

As we're on drones, in my opinion there's a minor concern to consider: a full stand of drones only has AP5+. I don't like that such a basic troop type is misrepresented that way. In my opinion drones should have multiple pulse carbines.

How about:
- Multiple pulse carbines AP4+15cm disrupt
- FF5+?
- 100 pts for four gun drone squads?
- heavy drone upgrade @ +25 pts then?

That kind of change would make me hesitate between normal drones and heavies.

Nope I'd rather stick with what we've got - no price hikes :D I use the standard drones over heavy at the moment BP

I think that the current stats for the Drones actually works quite well and reflects them in the game. They are not the most accurate shooters in 40K and I dont have any trouble taking them over heavy drones either.

OK. So how about this...

Tau make extensive use of floating, disc-shaped robots called Drones. In battle, Drones are programmed to shield their controllers by getting in the way of incoming fire or close combat opponents.
----
If a formation containing drones has at least one Tau armoured vehicle at the start of any formation activation, all drone units count as Light Vehicles for targetting purposes for that activation.

Additionally, formations which include drones and at least one other Tau unit do not receive blast markers for drone units which are killed, and drone units lost in assault dont count towards the assault resolution.

Drone units do not disallow garrisoning at setup if the formation would otherwise be able to do so. Formations consisting entirely of Drones follow the normal rules.

I'd really want to see this part removed:

If a formation containing drones has at least one Tau armoured vehicle at the start of any formation activation, all drone units count as Light Vehicles for targetting purposes for that activation.

It's so fiddly.

How about having a player choose if they are AV or inf before the game starts? (Or have two drone statlines.)

Two drone stat lines causes problems with identification through the game, and breaks the cardinal rule of 'one mini, two stats'.

Does anyone have a suggestion for the drone rule?

How about something like:  "Shots at a formation containing drones (either AP or AT, up to the number of drone units) must be allocated to drone units first - at the defender's discretion."

Not sure if it's any good but it's a slight change of direction and hopefully a simpler wording.

The idea is that the if attacker declares that they are (for example) making 5 AP3+ and 2 AT5+ shots at a unit of 6 Fire Warriors, 3 Devilfish and 4 Drones.  The Tau player can take the two AT and two of the AP on the drones - or take four of the AP and let the DF take the hits - it's their choice.
