Hi!

Since Xisor's giant prospector is out for the time being, we are left with two (soon three) alien races who have a role to play in dirtside operations performed by the Tau armed forces:

*Kroot
*Gue'etc
*Vespids

Looking at the list as it stands, is there an area where an option for a Demiurg unit (be it Infantry, LV, AV or WE) could be useful?

Perhaps keep it at least an AV, to make sure it doesn't raide the issue of what kind on infantry they would use in the field would be (and possibly allow us to use the existing auxiliary craft listed in Battlefleet Gothic as a reference)

I'd probably be able to think of something were I more awake - but I got nothing.

Well, I had a few ideas, but many of them recently infringe on other areas, but I'll detail as needed:

- Close Range Fire Support: Filled by almost everything in the Tau List.

- 'Dug In' Infantry of AV/LVs that are there to properly 'hold' an objective. This is something even the Kroot and the Humans aren't really good at. Not much in the list can do this except really 'full' formations, which I'd rather see shot straight out of 'Tau' side of the list[ie the 14-16 strong Tau Infantry formations that don't feel right].

- Armoured 'Beast' Formations. Again, it's not really a 'hole' in the list. The AMHC+Upgrade more than compensates, and the additon of the Scorpionfish and the Support Craft pretty much nullify the overt need for this. If there is a gap 'in amongst' this lot, however, I'd say the Demiurg can fill it, but it remains to be seen whether the Gap a] Exists and b] is one which needs filled

- Air Support? A nice saturation bombardment? Whilst it's missing from the Tau list, I think there's a *reason* for it. That said, the list does benefit from CCW MW attacks from the Kroot...I can easily see some of the Demiurg machinations being flyers[see my wee list written from the Fio's perspective].

- Massed Infantry Horde? Again, quite plausible from an 'automated Demiurg drones/machines/automatons' perspective, but is it necessery? No, not when there's real 'Tau' Drones, Kroot and Humans about to fill the gap.

- Light War Engine? This is a contender IMO. The only light WE is the Scorpionfish. In addition there's the flyers and support craft, but I wouldn't say that they really count especially. There's room for ideas at least, but not overall 'call' for anything.

- Titans? If any Tau ever wanted a Titan, all they'd need to do was ask [and show the money].  However, There doesn't seem to be a need for it to be perfectly honest.

- Drop Fortress? Now here's an idea, I'd say. An immobile 'dropped in' fortress-y thing, a bit like those in Inq. Lord's Inquisition Task Force list. It's a potential option should folks like the idea.

- Heavy War Engines? Again, like titans, all that has to be done is to ask. They're widely plausible.

- Heavy Infantry? Like the Exterminators that got thrashed out a while back, I think they're a possibility. Heavy[4+], slow[15cm], Fearless, decent FF[MW], 30cm MW6+ ranged weapons, with a cool Demiurg controlling it all...Protecting their investment I'd say! It's something that is as yet not present in the Tau list...is it something to consider as an opening in the Auxilliaries? I think so, the rest probably don't though.

- A combination of Various units? I think there's merit here for a combo of 'Titan + Heavy/Horde-Light Infantry' or 'War Engine + Heavy/Horde-Light Infantry', it may not be *needed* in the list however. The idea being as proposed elsewhere for a big 'war engine/titan', but giving it a nice transport capacity too. Inside could be the aforementioned Exterminator Heavy infantry, or a veritable swarm of small things used for scouring an asteroid...

I'd vote Exterminators + 'Something Big'. Exterminators as they emphasise a need to be going 'anti-Orking' and something big because it's a good hook, and it feels good for the Demiurg!

That said, we may get lynched for discussing this!

:D ?You certainly wont get lynched for this discussion!

I have always seen the Demiurg contingent to deal with artillery bombardments and such. Annexed to the Tau as seperate formations working in support of them.

I love the idea of the Demiurg getting involved in the party, and I would love to use them in home games, but I seriously doubt that the would get past the SG detectors when the list is submitted.
