I was messing around with the Tau army list a few days ago, just for the sake of fun, and created this monstrosity. It's probably not anything like balanced, or particularly good as armies go. But I think it'd be highly amusing to see take to the field. Behold in wonder at the Tau Armored Division:
Cadres:
Armoured Mobile Hunter Cadre (375) 4x Ion Hammerheads 2x Swordfish (+25) 1x Skyray (+75) Networked Drones (+25)
Armoured Mobile Hunter Cadre (375) 4x Ion Hammerheads 2x Swordfish (+25) 1x Skyray (+75) Networked Drones (+25)
Armoured Mobile Hunter Cadre (375) 4x Ion Hammerheads 2x Swordfish (+25) 1x Skyray (+75) Networked Drones (+25)
Contengents:
Scorpionfish Contingent (325) 1x Scorpionfish + Supreme Commander (+100)
Scorpionfish Contingent (225) 1x Scorpionfish
Scorpionfish Contingent (225) 1x Scorpionfish
Scorpionfish Contingent (225) 1x Scorpionfish
Gun Drone Squadron (75) 4x Heavy Gun Drones (50)
Markerlight Sentry Contingent (75) 6x Markerlight Sentry Drone
The only non-vehicle units in the army are the Gun Drones, which are there to add a little more spotting ability for the Scorpion fish (and because I couldn't find anything better to spend the points on). Is it practical? Probably not. Will it win games? I REALLY hope not, since it's a totally imbalanced force I threw together as a joke. Would it be fun to play? I think so. It'd certainly make some enemies twitch when they see that many guided missiles on the field!

Haha. I'd feel really sorry for anyone playing Nids against it or the partner list I put together, which trades a few of the Scorpionfish and one of the Armored cadres for a Manta.
"Oh. Your Hive Tyrant and all six Carnifexes get into melee with me! And yet... They still can't hit me in melee. Good luck rolling those 6+s!"
Heh. It'd be amusing to see, that's for sure, which was most of what this army list was put together for: Amusement factor. This is the kinda army I play when I don't really care about winning, and just want to see how frustrating and annoying I can be to my enemy ? | Using skimmers against nids isn't funny. You make them angry.
There again I took down a necron equitte formation with needs (gotta love termigaunts).
Not to mention that I have an unhealth attachment to bio artillery.
And you do have three BTS.

Indeed, this list only misses effective spotters like pathfinders or tetra to be really effective.

Oh, I have no doubt the 'nids could take that list apart very easily. I probably would go for the Manta version against Tyranids. Taking out skimmers isn't that hard... Taking out support craft is a little more painful
Really though, it's mostly just something I'd love to put together for fun. The idea of an entirely tank army for Tau is entertaining for me. Cus I love the way their vehicles look. Originally this one didn't have Networked Drones on the mobile hunter cadres, lumped the Supreme Commander Scorpionfish and another into a single unit and sported a second unit of Marker Sentries. More markerlights are good. But I decided to swap it around a little to give me leaders, plus another activation.

I'd try and juggle the list a bit to get one BTS goal, but, other than that, I think it's a *horrifying* army as opposed to a "silly" one!
That's a *massive* amount of firepower out there.

You may call this silly, but I'm only one Scorpionfish short of being able to field this, and I have a proxy for it as is.
Hmmm....

I'd say it's a perfectly viable army. I would change out the Sentry towers for another gun drone formation, not for spotting (obviously) but to chase down broken formations for hackdown hits, to screen, and to grab objectives.
Looks fun to play, though.

And be left with just one BTS goal! It'd be entertaining to see on the battlefield I think. Missiles, missiles, missiles, plus more AA firepower then you would know what to do with I suspect.

Considering that EVERY formation in the army except the Scorpionfish can act as Markerlight spotters. Yeah only one vehicle per unit for the Armored Cadres. But even so, suppresion won't stop the markerlights, since it's not a weapon, only breaking the unit will. And multiple Scorpionfish can make use of a single markerlight capable formation.

A planetfall SM force would shred it if played right, as would an air assault force deployed from an LC rather than from Thawks (because the LC could survive the defensive AA).
Similarly, I think a bike/FF-heavy eldar force woudl cause it problems.

I'm certain you could find lots of armies which could (and should) beat it fairly consistently. Planetfall, Landing-Craft based Marines. A few others could most likely as well. There're some ways to mitigate this, if you plan ahead. Depending on just when/where they drop their troops. If you win Initiative then putting two of the Scorpionfish on Overwatch can spell doom for almost any attempt at an air-assault (8 5+ MW shots or 12 AP 4+ shots is gonna ruin most peoples' days.) especially if you space the army out right. I'm certain that there're ways around this too. But that is rather the essence of the game, how do you defeat what the enemy throws at you? What steps do you take to disarm and dismantle him? Same tactics won't work the same way against different enemies, and they shouldn't.

I think its a viable army. I might back off of the SHT a bit (sorry honda) but I think it would be fun to try.
Man... I played against a chaos force this past weekend that would make me never play an all armor force. I hate higher strategy teleporting, podding, planetfalling, air assaulting hand to hand specialists when i'm playing Tau!
All too often when I started E:A, I was tempted to sacrifice balance and play the all armor E:A army. Time and Time again... as NH explained so eliquently, without infantry buffer's and balanced force - all armor armies just don't 'live' in a tourny situation.
I see an all armor list like this being fun in scenerio games, but I would seriously caution taking it to a top-tier tourny situation. In such skilled enviornments, you may pair up really bad.
As a mech and air-head at heart though, I'd love to hear how you fair should you take it to a local event.
Honda - list seems like something near and dear to your play style, and sounds like you almost have the model count. Keep us posted if you give it a go!
Cheers,

Tomorrow, in fact, against Orks. I figure I have nothing to lose since they've already kicked the crap out of me. Now it's for fun. Besides, I'm intrigued by the concept.
Of late I've been taking 2 x Scorpionfish and 1 x Scorpionfish + SC upgrade, so adding one more won't be that big a deal. What makes this interesting is that the HH have enough AP amongst them to harrass the infantry. The key of couse, will be in staying mobile while the green horde attempts to cordon off the board and push me into the corner. So I'll need to defeat a flank early on and then squeeze out to take on the line.
It'll be an interesting tactical problem.
