Hi!

It seems that the names I created for the Tau units have not been invalidated by anything in the new Codex, or in IA3 (and even if they were, I would still refer to them as of a Dal'yth Sept dialect anyway!)

So, will there be room in the next update for the names?

I can post up the list if CS doesn't already have it.

Offhand, and also in hindsight, I'd really prefer non-pinched-from-real-language names for them. Unless I'm entirely mistaken, they haven't done this before.

So Kra'we seems fine, but a Japanese word with apostrophes added would be out. [I should really have raised this with yourself and Shinnentai earlier, but it barely crossed my mind until now]

I am a little out of my depth here... but I would also like to move away from 'real world' names as much as possible. However, I do still have the list that was posted (I do have the intention to add the names).

Well, if Irish is good enough as an inspiration for many words in Lam-Eldannar, why not use Japanese as a (loose) inspiration for Tau terms?

Here's the list, by the way:

Fire Warrior = Shas'senshi (a means of referring to Shas warriors without recourse to rank)
Pathfinder = Shas'kusa'wake
Tetra = Shas'mono'mi
Piranha = Shas'ken'mi
XV15 = Shas'myen
XV8 suit = Shas'kik'yoku
XV88 = Shas'gen'hou
Devilfish = Shas'umi'kei
Hammerhead = Shas'mo'ku'zame
Swordfish = Shas'ka'jiki
Skyray = Shas'kor'ei
Stingray = Shas'aka'ei
Scorpionfish = Shas'ka'ku
Dragonfish (Scorpionfish w. SC) = Shas'ryu'o
Kroot Carnivores = Ryou'shi'vesa (vesa for Kroot serving in the Empire's forces, ranked ?la to ?o equating to Kroot tribal rank)
Kroot Master Shaper = Ryou?shi?o
Kroot Hounds = Ryou'shi'sou'ku
Krootox = Ryou'shi'gis'sha
Great Knarloc = Ryou'shi'kyou'ryu
Barracuda = Kor'ka'masu
Tiger Shark = Kor'tora'zame
Tiger Shark AX-1-0 = Kor'zuro'zame
Orca = Kor'shas'shi
Moray = Kor'utsu'bo
Manta =  Kor'shas'ma'kei

But Shas'la is Tau for Fire Warrior. A 'La' of the Fire Caste translates to 'Warrior', so 'Shas'la' is Firewarrior.

Pathfinder would be more akin to Shas'la'run'al, where run'al is hide or observation, well...something like thing.

The thing is that those names don't look Tau-ish! If you get my meaning...

Faiir enough, it's quite difficult and requires alot of *fudging* in the translation, but it could also be put that we apply to Jervis/Andy and ask them to 'picket' the studio finding out what the official Tau-designations are. Hopefully we won't have the Armada-style farce that would end up with the famous scientist Por'O Such and Such!  :80:

Shas'senshi refers to Fire Caste of any rank - and FW teams have shas'ui too!

Hmmm... something that might be of use to you has just forced its way to the front of my memory.

A couple of years ago, a member of the Conclave (GW's Inquisitor messageboard) by the name of 'Taufirestorm' posted a quite lengthy Tau Dictionary on that forum, with information drawn from as many official sources as he could find, often broken down into word-fragments (elements separated by an apostrophe) and then used to construct other words.

If anyone wants to have a look at it, I've attached a word document containing that dictionary to this post.
