I know 40k uses core/fast attack/support and stuff, but what is it for Tau? For instance my favourite units are pathfinder and hammerheads, would this be at all possible in 40k? What is the force structure you are encouraged to use there (and by extension what is the most common type of unit?).

Well, Fire Warrior squads are a 1+ choice, and are Troops.

Pathfinders are Fast Attack, while Hammerheads are Heavy Support.

HQ:
1+ Shas'El or Shas'O w/wo XV8 Bodyguard Team
Ethereal w/wo FW Honor Guard

Troops:
1+Firewarior Team w/wo Devilfish
Kroot Carnivore Squad w/wo Hounds/Krootox

Elite:
Crisis Team
Stealh Team

Fast Attack:
Gun Drone Squadron
Pathfinders w/ Devilfish
Pirahna Light Skimmer Team
Vespid Stingwings

Heavy Support:
XV88 Broadside Team
Sniper Drone Team
Hammerhead Gunship
Skyray Missile Gunship

Since 1 Firewarriror team and 1 Shas'O/Shas'El (HQ) in XV8 Suits are required, you will always see them on the board, with the HQ Crisis usually taking a retuine of XV8s along with it.

Kroot, for being a troop choice, dont get seen much on the board, that I've seen.

How many pathfinders and hammerhead tanks could I have in that set up with the minimum of other stuff?

Lets See...

1 HQ, Shas'El/Shas'O in Crisis Suit
2 Troops Choice, 1 of which must be a Firewarriors Team

Then your 3 Pathfinder Teams w/ Devilfish, and your 3 Hammerheads.

Note that would be a single Force org chart.

Don't know where this is going...

Keep in mind, an armored co in IG would be an entire force org charge in 40K.

1-2 HQ (a vanquisher)
2-6 TROOP (a Leman Russ)
0-3 Elite (Tank Commander in Leman Russ)

must have 1 HQ or 1 Elite for each Troop in the armoured co.

So in 40K in order to get the E:A Tank Co, that would be...

1 HQ, 2 Elite, 6 Troop... and a cheater LEMAN TANK as a extra that doesn't fit in the Force Org at all.

Cheers,

Rob

Tactica, as I understand the AC rules for 40k, each Tank Ace or HQ slot opens 2 Troops choices - but there's nothing stopping you taking more than you need for your troops selections :)

I thought that was the specific restriction D?

Each tank ace or HQ allowed 1-2 tanks.

I thought the point was to limit the amount of 'cheap tanks' you could put into the list. I thought it was a balancing factor.

Maybe I misread it.

In the AC list you can have two Leman MBT's for the commander and every tank ace (up to 3 -in elite slots).  Heavy support is provided by griffon/basilisk or demolisher.

In 40K (pre new codex) the majority of your competitive opponents played the Fish of Fury list.  The backbone was transports with firewarriors, 2-3 hammerheads, and some crisis suits (with drones to season to taste).  Sometimes you had scouts as well, but you'll see that more in new lists.  Kriit were not seen often in this mechanized variant.  They are more often played ina troop heavy context but even then aren't the most common.  They're not especially effective.
