So, the time is approaching for the E:A Tau FW order.

I'd like to get enough stuff for about 5k points of Tau, for several different possible 2700-3k forces.

Needless to say, I've got a few questions.

1.  Is the Manta worth the $$?  I mean, it's $90.  I know we made it worth the points, but should I cough up the cash for one now, or wait a bit?

I'm planning on 4 packs of railheads, 2 ions, and probably 2 packs of Skyrays and 2 of M-pod Hammerheads.  Should I get more?

Basing 2 battlesuits per, I need 3 Crisis suit packs, and 4 Broadside packs, right?

How much infantry?

Recon packs:  4 total?

I have no real interest in Kroot, if I don't really need them (my 40k Tau don't have any, so why should my Epic tau have them?)

4-6 Tigersharks, ~10 (total) 'cudas.  How many Orcas (counting a couple for Scorp/Dragon conversions)?

Probably get the FW BFG ships, too, and use a couple modified Emmissaries for Morays.

Fleetwise:
Carrier, 3 carrier escorts.
3 Cruisers
9-12 heavy escorts

any suggestions for the fleet?

Well, with Broadsides being classed as LV, you can basically base them one to a base. ?(How many bases is that? ?A lot!)

the Manta is a wonderful model and you should get one for that reason alone.

Hi Lion,

I have to agree with Jimbo...

If you're purely speaking about playing with the army, you might just put off the manta for a later purchase...

Of course, sometimes, later purchases end up being too much later.

Maksim-Smelchak.

Well, if you're Ok with a Manta proxy for a period of time, I found some Snap-tite B2 Stealth Bombers that can be converted into a decent representative of the Manta.

They run about $2.00 USD and you can get them at places like Hobby Lobby, Michael's.

For the fleet (for use in BFG) I would buy:

1 Custodian
2 Protectors (=1 pack)
2 Emissaries (=1 pack)
8 Wardens (=2 packs)
6 Castellans (=2 packs)

Enough for around 1500pts. I myself, whenever I have the money will buy in stages:

stage 1: Protectors + 2 Castellan
stage 2: Emissary + 1 Warden
stage 3: Custodian + 1 Warden
stage 4: Orbital City + 2 Security Orbitals

Yeah, my Visa's already whimpering and begging for mercy, and this purchase probably won't happen until later this spring.

But if I don't have enough to vary the army, I'll get stuck in the rut I've been in playing 40k.

But the models look so good...  Sigh.

Thanks for the fleet advice, BH.

LitS - Do you think your list will require a Manta? I've been tossing up whether to get one myself but keep coming back to the fact that I probably wouldn't use it because of the points sink/loss of activations it represents in a 3000 point game.

Don't forget FireWarriors and Pathfinders...

I managed to get 1 cadre of FW's out of one pack by basing 3 per stand along with a drone and I think they look OK. So I would advise at least 2 packs (you'll need upgrades so if you think you'll need 2 cadres plus upgrades thats at least 3 packs...)

You'll need a character pack, and also some stealth suits.

And I would advise buying lots of gun drones to sprinkle around (4 or 5 packs probably).

If you want to see what the infantry and suits look like (I based Crisis suits 2 per stand for economic reasons!) then check out my piccies here

Lion,

The Manta is a beautiful model. Is it 90.00 beautiful - no. What forgeworld model is worth its cost for display value alone?

(hmm... OK, there are a select few, but in general epic FW models are not worth their price anyway. digression: my 40K chaos titan gets a lot of praise and is a great display piece in lighted cabinets... /digression)

I'm not convinced 'tactically' that the Manta is worth 850 points.

I've played many 5K games, so far, when I take the Manta - I regret it. (personal opinion)

First, it chews up a huge portion of the restricted 33% points. That's a problem for a list that really needs those points in other places. How many other aircraft pieces are must have for you?

If you say 1 barracuda flight, 1 TS, 1 hero and at least 1 moray - thats already 250 + 175 + 150 + 300 = 875 in non-Manta stuff. You have to be playing a 2700 point game for all that to be legal... now add a manta (875+850=) 1725 points in aircaste. Now you need to be playing 5175 point game to get all of your must have aircaste into the same game. BTW: that's no orca for anyone broadside drops, and that's not necessarily even your must have air caste selection of stuff. So the point is, think about those precious 33% restricted points and decide how important 850 points of Manta is worth to you....

Second, "How often do you use the IG Warlord?"

The Manta is more suseptable to damage and costs the same as a Warlord. It can always be seen too so that means it never hides and never gets the cover bonus. You will have your challenges justifying the Manta **IF** you don't regularly justify the Warlord in your IG army.

Next, forget the restricted points in a list... 850 points for a single formation hits the overall army list hard. There are a lot of things you can buy for 850 points. If you are not using the transport capability - then one wonders if you really need the Manta. Would you say you would generally get more use out of the Manta than any of the following combinations?

850 = 2 Moray(600) + 1 Hero(150) + 100 points to use
850 = 2 Morays(600) + 4 HH(250)
850 = 1 Moray(300) + AMHC (375) + network Drone(25) + Piranha Contingent (150)
850 = 1 Moray(300) + 2 TS AX-1-0(350) + FW Cadre(200)

To me right now, you buy the Manta because you like the model or you like the idea of playing the model for fun.

Do not buy it because you think its going to tactically advance your aresonel of tricks. Not based upon the current points.

Cheers,

OK, that's the info I was looking for.

P, Did you actually buy 100k of epic Tau?  Quick, call 911, my Visa just crawled out of my wallet and died! :p
