Hi Guys

Thought it was about I introduced myself as I've been lurking around here for a while....

I've recently started building up a Tau force as a second army (no prizes for guessing my first one!!). ?I have my first set of battles with the force on Superbowl weekend with a few friends (we always meet up every year and watch the game/drink lots of beer/eat lots of curry etc etc) and recently we have picked up on Epic again after a long time out, so are having a few battles.

Anyway I'll be fighting AMTL, Eldar and SM (well 2 out of 3 but won't know till I get there). We are allowed a 4000pt pool (to include all formations and upgrades etc) out of which we choose 1800pt legal armies (we are playing on 4x4 tables) , so it should make for an interesting weekend.
Any advice would be welcomed!! (however have got loads already from this forum).

I've managed to paint about 1500pts worth so far and the results can be fewed on photobucket:

My painted Tau

My painting isn't as good as most of you on here but I'm happy with the results.

Anyway I'll try and post a review of the weekend with some battle summaries (won't but full batreps though!!).

Welcome to the boards, orky!

Nice looking Tau. Don't worry about feeling inadequate about your painting skills. I got used to it real quick! :D

So when do we get to see some pics of da boyz? :p

How about now??? :p

There's quite a few here and some of my great gargant (Me-Emexfive) here.

I had a problem with some of the boyz in that after varnishing and drying they seemed to take on a really horrible melted look (plastic figs) so some look a bit strange.....

Thanks for the pics, orky. I really like the gargant.

Thanks.. He's not quite finished yet.. I have crew on an old brush half painted waiting to be finished...

But I kind of got into Tau before I finished them so they are now in the WIP box to come back to later......

Welcome aboard.
Nice Army. Good Painting Scheme. If only I had known that they have others beside the Brown ones.....

Cheers!

Looking good.  If I can make one suggestion to improve your painting, I would thin your paints down more.  It'll clean up the smoothness of your paint.

Thanks guys...

Breten funny you should say that.... I popped into Hobbystore today and bought some acrylic medium just for that job (and some syringes) so I'll try that and also some water and see which I prefer..  Good tip thanks.

Nothing wrong with those paintjobs! Keep it up.

I use a mix of extender, retarder and water to thin my paints. I typically only use a syringe when thinning for airbrush work - when using a brush I go by feel. Also I have discovered that using a wet palette has really helped extend the working time of my paint. I have left paint on my palette overnight and it is still usable the next night.

Hi Orkybob,

Though I'd be the first to offer some tactical advice.  Please forgive me if its all too obvious :)

AMTL: @1800 points means two reavers or one warlord most likely.  If its the warlord just avoid it.  Its slow and will have trouble catching the faster Tau units. Pick off the weaker suport formations and especially kill off any warhounds as they are the likely to be the biggest threat.  Depending on what you have available model-wise the (somewhat contraversial) AX-0-1 will be good against AMTL (they have short range flak).  As will pop-up attacks from Railgun HammerHeads.

Eldar: be wary of the Wraithgate.  If the Eldar take one then make sure you place your objectives in the Eldar half near the edges, then attack the side without the gate to reduce threat from off-board formations.  (Read the batreps between Chroma and Dobbsy to see the power of good wraithgate use.)  Proabably best to go for more activations against the Eldar, so smaller formations.  Perhaps Broadsides as they will do well against more lightly armoured Eldar vehicles (eg Falcons, Prisms, Jet Bikes etc).  Eldar flak and aircraft mean its probably best to forego aircraft of your own but take more flak (eg IC HammerHeads).

SM:  Beware of deep-striking options (drop-pods and terminators), deploy with formations of scouts shielding important formations from air assault.  SM typically have few AA assets so you can include aircraft against them, Barracudas could do well.   SM strength lies in their infantry, so an anti-infantry platform like the Stingray should do well against them.  Teleporting stealths could also help against terminators, as you can wait till the terminators arrive then deploy the stealths to intercept/block them, or just to make their assault that bit more dicey.

Thanks guys,

clausewitz - Nice tactic tips. Against AMTL I think I'm going to go for something like a Moray and an AX-1-0 with a FW cadre and tetra's (with Piranha upgrade) to lay down some marklights, a Hunter cadre with swordfish, skyray and networked drones, a HH contingent with skyray , swordfish and networked drones and see how that lot gets on against them. I figure thats reasonably balanced with some AA cover, TK power from the skys and 12 nice vehicles to get rid of some of those pesky shields.. (not too sure about the FW cadre but that was sort of using up the points and added an activation - as I had to take another cadre or just more upgrades - I was figuring in garrisoning them on overwatch and using the markerlights for GM's).

I'll remember about the wraithgate thanks.

My planned army for the SM needs some rethink... ?Iwant to try out the Barracuda so they will get included I think, but was also going to try and include quite a few disrupt weapons so as to get them to break more often. Haven't got any stealth suits yet (yeah Forge World will be getting even more of my money.........) so that tactic will have to wait for another day. Thats just identified a major problem of the figures I have.. there's a distinct lack of scout units.. hmm I 'll concentrate on that next order.... ?I may try using gun drones intead however I don't think I'll get the spread of them - I'll have to try and use them carefully.

I'm really looking forward to using this army as it'll take a bit more thought than the boyz...

Very nice paint job there.  Also love the static grass.  It looks like grass.  The way bits stick up, like clumps of grass.  (okay i haven't had enough coffee and I'm rambling again)

What size static grass do you use?

Yeah I'm pleased with the grass too :-)

All the basing is using stuff from Antenociti's workshop here

I bought their "Base Box? 2- Summer " and I must say I'm very impressed with it. It's really just glue and go!! ?The only think I have had to paint was the rock on the my Shas'el

All the basing is stuff from that one box and its a great selection. ?I think I saw soemone mention them on these forums so thought I'd give them a go - well for ?3 I couldn't go wrong! ?:D
