Greetings!

Dobbsy happens to find himself in my neighbourhood, instead of Australia, this New Year so we decided to meet up and have a match.

It'll be 3000 points at the Oakville GW Bunker this Thursday, hoping to start around noon. ?We also hope to be able to log it and do up a battle report!

So, if anyone wants to pass by to watch or heckle or whatever, come on down!

My GF is in the GTA (well, she will be when she's done with her visit here), when I come over I'll be heading to the Oakville bunker looking for FOrgeworld minis and some Epic/BFG trouble!

Well, Dobbsy and I got in *two* games yesterday. ?It was great meeting him and playing against his awesome looking Tau... even if I did get into a little trouble with the girlfriend for staying out so late and not calling... *sigh* *laugh*

I hope to get at least one of the reports done today.

Setup

Objectives

4'x6' Table

Garrisons

Tau ?kept the Stealth Contingent off board.

Ulthw? kept both Windrider Troupes and Guardian Warhost 1 off board via Wraithgate.

Tau Starship would have come in Turn 1, but as there were no targets for its pin-point attacks we didn't bother with it (sneaky Eldar!  Where are your Engines of Vaul and Revenants?!)

Ulthw? garrisoned the Ranger Troupe in the forest near the Wraithgate

Tau garrisoned the Pathfinder contingent in the forest by the crashed Phoenix objective.

Deployment

Ulthw?

Turn 1

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Ulthw?

Not quite living up to their names, the Fire Prisms of Quick Death double forward, popping up to fire on the buttoned up Fire Warrior Cadre, causing no damage, and darting back to cover.

Seeing their young rivals hiding amongst the trees, the Ranger Troupe advances on the Pathfinders, firing on them and disabling two units with their low-powered tagging lasers.

From his perch high on a hill, the Sha'vre of Da'Eldi'Ka surveys the massed ranks of Eldar tanks before him, and goes on overwatch, awaiting their approach.

Or'es'Nan tries to target the Rangers hiding in the woods, but the training gear additions have messed up his commlinks and he is unable to get his contingent to fire and spends his time getting them all on the same channel.

Beautiful Rain of Fire doubles forward in a hit-and-run against the Broadsides and the targeting computers register a "fatal" hit against one of the bulky suits.

The air shimmers as the Wraithgate opens and the Protectors of Fate double out towards Da'Eldi'Ka. ?The Railheads open fire on the approaching Guardians, downing two Wraithguard, and taking no casualties from the return fire.

Seeing that their protective umbrella has dropped, Sha'is'Ka floats upwards, going into overwatch from on high, their gravitic motors straining to keep them in position.

Ol'nan'Yon advances against the Protectors, guns blazing, but the trees protect most of them and only 2 Guardians go red.

Detecting a gap in the Tau defensive coverage, the Winterhawks double forward, skirting the edge of overwatch range to blast the Devilfish of the Fire Warriors with pulses of laserlight. ?Two to the APC register as kills along with 3 of the Fire Warrior units inside!

Disturbed by this onslaught the Shas'O requires two tries to rally his warriors, moving slightly forward, debussing, and removing 5 blastmarkers.

Final Response doubles forward to pulse against the Stingrays, taking two of the missile laden tanks out of the fray.

Kais'korst'la marshals, moving forward to support the Pathfinders.

The Pathfinders marshal as well, firing on the elusive Rangers to no effect.

The Bringers of Woe double forward, straying into Sha'is'Ka's seeker missile range, as they move against the tanks of Da'Eldi'Ka. ?The Falcons are outside of markerlight range and none of the missiles strike home, but the Eldar are able to eliminate on of the railcannon Hammerheads.

The Dreamslayers 'port into their Wave Serpents and march across the battlefield to a flanking position near the Ion Cannon Hammerheads.

The Weavers of Destiny also march forward, reaching cover at the mid point of the far left flank.

Those Who Guide order their warriors onto overwatch as they appraise the training exercise through their Seer Stones.

All formations rallied, but the Tau were left with a few scattered blastmarkers and the Protectors of Fate held on to two.

Turn 2

A fiery image of death and destruction appears as the Farseer of the Protectors of Fate activates a hologram of the Avatar near her position.

In quick response, the fractured images of the Stealth Suits appear, forming an extended picket line in front of the massed Tau army.

Strategy Roll: Ulthw?

Trying to make up for their initial poor showing, the tanks of Quick Death advance, popping up to fire on the Ion Cannon Hammerheads, immobilizing one of them.

Pouncing on their weakend prey, the Dreamslayers flicker between warp and reality as they lay waste to the remnants of Sha'is'Ka, completely eliminating them from the exercise, and then jumping forward to get near the bulk of the enemy.

The Farseer of the Protectors calls on the Avatar and the Bringers of Woe to engage the Stealthsuits, who are also commingled with the Stingrays, Crisis Cadre, Railgun Hammerheads, and the Shas'O's Fire Warrior Cadre! ?The Stealthsuit jetpack forward to try to slow the blood-dripping behemoth that is the Avatar, but it plows into two of them. ?The rest of the Tau also advance in a meagre attempt to bring more close range weapons to bear on the pressing Eldar. ?The firststrike of the Stealth suits is damaging, but not enough to stem the Eldar tide; Five Stealth suits are "killed" along with a Crisis suit, while only 2 Weapon platforms, a Wraithguard, and the Farseer who led them are taken out of action. ?The Eldar's fierce charge is too much for the Tau and the heart of their army breaks, scattering to the various corners of the battlefield, constrained by the Eldar, who follow after them.

Resolute despite seeing most of his army in tatters, the Sha'vre of Kais'Korst'la doubles to bring the Winterhawks into line of sight and eliminates the Firestorm.

Seeing the havoc wreaked by the Warp Spiders, the Pathfinders advance on them; sniping the Exarch who shrieks and waves her power blades at them.

The remaining Falcons of the Winterhawks marshal, popping up to fire on the Fire Warrior Cadre, disabling another Devilfish and two Fire Warriors.

Distracted by all the running Tau, the Fire Prisms of Beautiful Rain of Fire move forward without firing.

Seeing the Broadsides caught in a crossfire, the Eldar Rangers advance on the heavy weapon units eliminating one of them and breaking the unit.

Final Response makes a final response as they race forward to engage the shattered Fire Warrior Cadre, the conflict is vicious, but brief, as the entire Cadre is put out of action.

Viewing the flashing red on his hardwired battlestats display and seeing that he has only one formation left still in active condition, while the Eldar still have more units in reserve, the Shas'O taps out a full channel command he never thought he'd give: "All units Full Surrender. ?Full Surrender? for the Greater Good!"

End of Turn: Tau 0 (none) vs Ulthw? 4 (Blitzkrieg, BTS, Take and Hold, They Shall Not Pass)

Well, that was a good, if brutal, game!

Dobbsy and I definitely had a lot to talk about after that. ?Tau definitely have a blastmarker problem very reminisent of the "3rd Turn Wilt" that Eldar initially suffered with. ?I look forward to reading over the new Tau list to see if that's been addressed.

I don't believe Dobbsy has good internet access at the moment, so we may have to wait a bit to hear his comments.

We played a second battle at 2750 points that I hope to be able to post soon.

Chroma,

I liked the pictures and use of fluffy names in the report, very helpful and flavorful at the same time! Thank you!

"Final Response" delivering the final response was ironic as well as entertaining. :)

So, Turn 2 concede by Tau with a 0-4 margin of victory to Eldar.

Hmm... How do you say "OUCH" in Tau, Nerroth?

Chroma, in looking at the initial lists. I thought you went pretty infantry heavy and rapid strike. Definitely a way to exploit tau's assault range weaknesses.

Tau seemed to leave certain toys at home and go for a very stable infantry and tank fire base. This isn't my choice of army comp personally - but I thought his infantry had enough to throw more pain your way than was present in the bat rep. I also thought he took more than enough tanks to deal with the pressing transport threat.

What do you think went wrong to force the turn 2 concede against the eldar skimming rapid strike force? Was it all BM managment?  How much would you say was differing tactics or possibly list match up issues? Did the Tau have composition issues to deal with the Eldar threat? Were his formations not flexible enough? Was there not enough AT or AP fire at a needed distance? Would you say you simply out gamed/played him that bad?

In summary, what do you suppose were the issues not making this a closer game?

Would you say there were plenty of odd circumstances attributing to this result and its not really the norm result expected from this kind of match up? If not - general recomendations from the opponent's perspective?

Its good to see others continuing to recognize the BM management problem. Its very evident against races that are well suited for BM managent and Eldar are probably at the top of that list.

Its well known that Eldar have been my nemisis with Tau and orcs and chaos have proven to be difficult challenges as well. I've not used the present list against Eldar but it sounds as if there's may be a wrinkle or two to be ironed out yet.

Cheers for the bat rep.

BTW: any chance you can at least give us a feel for how the second game went?

I'm not 100% on that, Dobbsy may have been using one of the WIP lists. ?He'd gotten the "latest" in Australia when he was there, but hadn't been checking up the past few weeks he's been here in Canada, so I'm not sure which exact list he was using.

When I was going over the notes, I used the 3.2.3 list to calculate point values and it all seemed to work out and the performance on the field seemed to match up. ?

What seems out of place?

EDIT - DOH!  I meant *4.2.3*!!!  Thanks for the heads-up Tactica!!!
