Okay, my fearless Fire Warrior unit, lead by an Ethereal, is jumped by a mixed unit of Swooping Hawks and Warp Spiders. Using their infiltrator ability the Spiders are positioned to tag the Ethereal and do so with first strike, shredding him.
What happens then? How is the engagement resolved? The FW break immediately, but are still in an engagement, will they be destroyed if they lose the roll off? Do they immediately withdraw instead and is the roll-off still made?
Inquiring minds want to know!

I'd say that you would conduct the assault as normal, but then after the assault the FW would break if they hadn't already.
Reasoning. ?If the same FW were shot by my IG Infantry Coy. with attached snipers. ?With the IG units firing AT shots at the Devil Fish and the snipers targeting the Etheral. ?If the etheral was killed by the snipers then any kills on the DF would not count as kills on a broken unit (i.e. BMs causing kills).
Thats my take on it anyway. Seems the simplest interpretation.

I agree. The principal is that all morale effects (BMs, breaking) are resolved at the end of the assault after resolution.

In the ethereals notes it states that if the ethereal unit is killed then the formation it is attached to will break automatically ,not immediately.

Tau general commences crying like little girl.

Given:
Tau v3.3.3 Ethereal Datasheet, Notes: "If Ethereal is killed, his formation breaks automatically."
Exhibit A-C A. Ethereal must be killed to generate effect. B. 'Automatically' is not synonomous with 'Immediately'. C. 'Automatically' seems to mean, 'instead of chance'.
Exhibit D-F D. In combat, we fight until there's a clear winner. E. We do not apply blast markers until a winner is declared F. We do not check for a 'chance' of break, until a winner is determined
Conclusion By If then logic, it seems you can conclude that said formation would not 'automatically break' until it had an opportunity to do so, which would be after a clear winner is determined from the proposed combat.
Just my 2 cents and thought process anyway. (for better or worse!)
Cheers,

In a 'normal' assault, which lasts over more than one combat round, the force would not break until the conclusion of combat, even if they received enough blast markers to break them in the first round. Therefore, I think that this logic carries over to the Ethereal, and the formation only breaks at the conclusion of the entire combat.

That makes sense.
What about rewording the Ethereal death/breaking test to "The unit automatically breaks at the end of the current action."?
