So I got a lot of games of EPIC in this weekend, testing the Tau 4.3.3 lists. I'm not putting paint on any Tau minis until the rules are finished (and, hopefully, they're in metal!), so I proxied with my Eldar models. As well, my friend's "Nomad Chapter" Marines have recently had a schism, with some remaining loyal, if somewhat heretically, to the Imperium, and others, following their corrupted Chaplains, loyal to Khorne. It's been an ongoing campaign/game point in our local play group, and this is who the Tau bumped into on a dark and stormy night... |

Turn 1 Strategy Roll: Tau The Tetras of Mont're'Naga double forward into the ruined city, spreading themselves out and marking units from every formation in the enemy army before firing ineffectively on the Deathriders The Stingrays follow up this bold move by doubling forward and raining down missiles on Aregan's Ravagers. ?The shooting is poor, even with markerlights, and only a single Rhino and Chaos Space Marine unit is destroyed. Screaming into the air, the Flames of Rage descend on the Tetras, who counter-charge to bring the Deathriders closer to the fight? it is over quickly as the Tetras are wiped out without inflicting a single casualty on the enemy. The deaths of the Tetra crews mean the enemy is unlit, so the Pathfinders also double forward lighting the Armoured Company while firing on the Raptor Cult to no effect. Da'Vash'Mont advances and lobs Seeker Missiles at Sons of Thunder, but the heavy armour of the corrupted Land Raiders shrug off the strike. Growling nearly as loudly as their bikes, the Deathriders pause, and then race forth to engage the Pathfinders, who are wiped out to a Tau like their Tetra riding brothers? Without markerlights it is difficult to decide what to target, but the Hammerheads of Cal'Au'Ka eventually double forward, popping up to fire on the Chaos Warlord's Retinue, scoring lethal hits on two Rhinos. The Sons of Thunder rumble forward, advancing towards the Stingrays. ?Many of their shots miss their mark and only one grav-tank is swatted down. In an attempt to stop the armoured might of the enemy tanks, the Shas'O doubles towards them and disables one Predator. Eager to get into the fray, the Chaos Warlord orders his warriors forward, but they all rush for the remaining Rhino in a flurry of confusion and chainswords. ?He curses as they fail to move forward, confusion still reigning in his ranks. (Failed Marshal action, failed re-roll, and then rolled a "1" and a "2" on the rally?*laugh*) The forces of Chaos all rally, but the Tau are shaken by the gruesome deaths of the Pathfinders and none of them do? |

Turn 2 There is a nauseating shimmering behind the Armoured Cadre as the Chosesn Space Marines teleport behind them, in a deadly cross-fire situation? Strategy Roll: Black Legion Growling in unholy unison the Flames of Rage and Deathriders blast forward to engage Cal'Au'Ka's grav-tanks, with the Fists of Fury in close support. ?The carnage is awful to behold as all the Tau armour is sent crashing to the ground in blood and flames and only a single Bike unit is killed in return? The Sons of Thunder hold their ground sustaining fire on the Stingrays, knocking out two of them and sending the others packing for the hills. The Shas'O advances on the deadly Armoured Company and unleashes the best of Tau weapon technology. ?As the missile trails clear a single Predator is detected rapidly moving back into the ruined city, leaving the riddled hulks of the rest of his company behind. Their work with the Hammerheads done, the Fists of Fury double towards the Piranhas, but are unable to get the agile skimmers in range of their weapons. The Piranhas dart away, doubling towards Aregan's Ravagers, they pop up to launch missiles, but they blindly miss any targets. Shouting out "Blood for the Blood God!", the Chaos Warlord summons 10 Bloodletters and prepares to engage the Piranhas. ?The confusion over who gets to ride in the remaining Rhino erupts into fisticuffs for the Khornate Marines and they barely make a move forward as the Warlords begins taking names and heads? (That's two frustrating turns for the Chaos Warlord? good thing for him the rest of his army is kicking tau'utt!) The lone Predator and the Stingrays fail to rally? |

Turn 3 Strategy Roll: Black Legion Slogging through the wreckage of the Hammerheads, the Fists of Fury double towards the Crisis Cadre, but their Reapers can't pierce the Tau armour. Again the Chaos Warlord calls upon the Blessing of Khorne? and a massive Bloodthirster appears, roaring in profane fury. ?The Warlord orders his mass of warriors and daemons to assault the Crisis suits, which simply flit away? well out of reach. ?The Warlord screams out his frustration and plunges his weapon into the nearby Chaos Champion? and orders the daemons to form a protective ring around him. (What, hilariously to me, happened is that the initial placement of the Bloodthirster put him in range of the Crisis suits, until we remembered that summoned Daemons have to be placed within 5cm of a non-Daemonic unit from the formation, those 11cm were just enough to save the Tau, as none of the daemons had firefight and the Chaos player didn't want to risk getting hit by a bunch of Macro attacks! ?*laugh*) The Shas'O double away from the strangely screaming enemy to grab a nearby objective, firing on the Raptor Cult and killing two squads of the strange Gue'la. The Flames of Rage respond by leaping past the Crisis suits and marching to the Tau Blitzkrieg. The Piranhas pull a similar stunt, doubling to the Black Legion Blitzkrieg while popping up to fire on the Chaos Marine Retinue. ?They decide the argument over the Rhino by finally destroying it. Seeing that Chaos certainly reigns all around them, the Deathriders double to reach one of the Tau forward objectives, feeling pretty pleased with themselves? End of Turn: Black Legion 3 (Blitzkrieg, BTS, Take and Hold) vs Tau 2 (Blitzkrieg, Take and Hold) |

Well, that was one of the most unintentionally hilarious games of EPIC I've ever played... and I really learned not to get close to Chaos Marines! I tried a more aggressive approach this time, instead of the Patient Hunter, it didn't really work out that well against the mobile Chaos. I'm sure things would've been even worse if the Chaos Retinue had been able to do anything! *laugh* Not sure if I'll get the second battle up tonight. I look forward to comments! |

Hi, sad to see You lost against those evil Bunch of Gue?. A few questions , why did you took the Tetras solo? And not with the Piranhas as upgrade? And why you prefered the Pathfinder with Stealth upgrade instead of a pure Stealth Contingent? The Chosen are supposed to be the deadliest in the List , I remember them as I fought with Chaos agains Grey Knights , the put a heavy fight against Terminators and Grey Knights in a combined imperial assault. So here nothing to blame at you. I noticed as well that you didn?t field any Air Power nor a Moray. I think the Moray could had helped a lot. Maybe you should have take a Firewarrior Cadre to screen you Hammerheads. But I guess that at a 2000 Points level choices are darn difficult to make. Nevertheless , good report , and I learned a lot. Cheers! Steele |

Wow, it *so* depends on terrain, opponent, and enemy army that it's hard to say. Probably 2/3 Long and 1/3 Corner-to-Corner would be the split in most of the games we play here. I like to pick Corner-to-Corner if I can, as it seems not a lot of people have experience with it. My reasons being twofold: 1) It gives them more experience with it! and 2) I'm a git who like the psychological advantage if I can get it. *laugh* And, yeah, I think I averaged a game of EPIC a day last week... WOOT! The logging system we use for playtest games makes writing up the batreps a breeze... the toughest part is making up names for the units! *laugh* |

As Tau and IG are my main two lists, and the table is usually set up to be mutually agreeable, I don't find that I get to pick table sides all that much. ![]() I do enjoy the corner to corner approach more myself. I think it widens flanks and brakes up traditional mentalities of the battlefield. If one player digs into a corner in the backfield, it can be interesting to see how that plays out as well. 2/3 and 1/3 is probably more corner to corner games than I get to play. I'm probably more 3/4 long to long and 1/4 corner to corner myself. (not by my choosing) ![]() I fully appreciate the psychological advantages you speak of. ![]() |
